Trevor Parkes
Position: Right Wing
Shoots: Right
Vitals: 6’1” / 180 lbs.
Birthdate: May 13, 1991
Hometown: Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada
Acquired: Signed as a free agent by Detroit in 2010
Team: Montreal (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League)
CSS Ranking: No. 197 among North American skaters
Departed: 2014 (not tendered qualifying offer, became free agent)

Enjoyed a good QMJHL rookie season with Montreal in 2009-10 (66-27-20-47) and was ranked 197th among North Americans by Central Scouting for the 2010 NHL draft, but was passed over … Attended the Red Wings’ 2010 prospects tournament and training camp in Traverse City, Mich., as a free agent, and made a huge impression with his guts and work ethic, earning a three-year entry-level contract … Returned to QMJHL in 2010-11 and led Montreal in goals, points, power-play goals and shots (60-33-29-62, plus-26, 12 PPG, 210 SOG), while also finishing among league leaders in goals (15th), power-play goals (T9th), scoring (34th) and dangerous shots (seventh) … Represented QMJHL in 2010 Canada-Russia Subway Super Series and was Montreal’s top goal-scorer in two-round 2011 playoff run … Split next three seasons between ECHL Toledo and AHL Grand Rapids, absolutely dominating at the ECHL level (50-35-33-68) but going unrewarded at the AHL level with only limited ice time with 44 games in 2011-12 (44-2-6-8) and 36 games in 2012-13 and 2013-14 (36-3-6-9, 36-6-3-9) … Red Wings opted not to tender him a qualifying offer following the 2013-14 and allowed him to walk as an unrestricted free agent.

Good shooter who loves to fire the puck on net … Possesses a goal-scorer’s mentality, going to the net and playing in traffic … Throws hard hits and gets involved physically … He’s had to earn every opportunity he’s gotten, even at the junior level, and has tremendous work ethic as a result … Showed guts playing through injuries to earn a contract with the Red Wings … Skating is his biggest drawback, and he must get faster to have a chance at the NHL … Plays a very basic offensive game and his scoring upside is limited beyond the minors.

“He’s a guy that’s a bit of a work in progress. He’s a tall rangy gangly kid that doesn’t have any strength but he’s got good hands and he has a nose for the net.” — Red Wings general manager Ken Holland (September 2010) … “He’s pretty gritty, he goes into the hard areas, he competes, and he has a knack — the puck kind of follows him around a little bit. He’s in the right place at the right time, the puck comes to him, he gets it off, and he puts it in.” — Red Wings scout Mark Leach (January 2011).
