HISTORY AND HIGHLIGHTS
Datsyuk was turning heads with his offensive skills as far back as 1996-97, but went mostly unnoticed by scouts because of his gangly build and ugly skating stride … Passed over in two NHL drafts … Uncovered by the Red Wings when scout Hakan Andersson went to a game to scout more highly-touted Dmitri Kalinin … Red Wings took a late-round gamble on his stick skills and hockey mind … Fazed by culture in early trips to the U.S. for prospect camps and wasn’t rushed … Didn’t make believers out of the Red Wings in his first two seasons after being drafted and missed most of 1999-00 with a serious foot injury … Broke through in 2000-01 with Kazan of the Russian Super League (26 points in 42 games) and was a key player for Russia at the 2001 IIHF world championship … Signed with the Red Wings in 2001, won a Stanley Cup that season and gradually developed into a franchise player.

RWC SCOUTING EXCERPTS
Fantastic playmaker … Not an elite finisher but can make plays at top speeds and stickhandles well in traffic … Shifty and a legitimate threat with the puck … Phenomenal hockey sense … Must avoid playing a perimeter game and become more involved down low … Awkward skating stride.

RWC SCOUT QUOTES
“We project him as a second-line centre in the mold of Igor Larionov. It’s hard to compare someone to Larionov but he has a sixth sense with the puck.” — Red Wings assistant GM Jim Nill (2000).
