HISTORY AND HIGHLIGHTS
Many thought Fischer would be a top-15 pick, but the Red Wings, coming off a Stanley Cup win, stole him at 26th overall … Cracked Red Wings’ roster full-time as a 19-year-old in 1999-00 … Developed into Detroit’s No. 3 defenseman for their 2002 Stanley Cup run … Serious knee injury derailed his development in 2002-03 and he struggled to get back on track … Poised for breakthrough in 2005 when he collapsed on Detroit’s bench in a game on Nov. 21, going into cardiac arrest before being resuscitated … The specific ailment that caused his collapse is unknown, but he hasn’t played since … Hired as Detroit’s director of player development in 2007.
