HISTORY AND HIGHLIGHTS
Many thought Fischer would be a top-15 pick, but the Red Wings, coming off a Stanley Cup win, stole him at 26th overall … Cracked Red Wings’ roster full-time as a 19-year-old in 1999-00 … Developed into Detroit’s No. 3 defenseman for their 2002 Stanley Cup run … Serious knee injury derailed his development in 2002-03 and he struggled to get back on track … Poised for breakthrough in 2005 when he collapsed on Detroit’s bench in a game on Nov. 21, going into cardiac arrest before being resuscitated … The specific ailment that caused his collapse is unknown, but he hasn’t played since … Hired as Detroit’s director of player development in 2007.

RWC SCOUTING EXCERPTS
Powerful skater with huge stride … Great size, strength and reach … Joins the rush without sacrificing defensive play … Armed with a great first pass … Booming shot … Nasty streak … Capable of being a punishing hitter, but needs to make a more consistent physical impact … Needs to evolve offensively to be a true top-pairing defenseman.

RWC SCOUT QUOTES
“Jiri moves the puck very well. I guess you’d call him a poor man’s Chris Pronger. We’ve very, very happy we got him. We’re not saying we’re smarter than anyone else (for drafting him), but we liked him. Maybe we’re wrong. We think we’re right. We’ll find out in three or four years.” — Red Wings assistant GM Jim Nill (1998) … “He’s got everything you want in a player: excellent size, mobility, great character. He’s our future investment.” — Nill (1999).
