STORIES

HISTORY AND HIGHLIGHTS
Rimouski’s fifth overall pick in the 2007 QMJHL draft, Fournier put up good numbers in his NHL draft year in 2008-09 (66-3-25-28, 72 shots, 74 hits) and gained exposure as Oceanic hosted Memorial Cup … Selected in the third round, 90th overall, by Red Wings in 2009 NHL draft … Missed most of training camp in 2009-10 and the first month of the season with a shoulder injury, but returned to the QMJHL with Rimouski to post solid numbers (58-13-37-50, 136 shots, 102 hits) … Saw his production dip in 2010-11 with Rimouski and was unable to elevate himself to QMJHL all-star territory (57-12-32-44, 13th in the league among defensemen) but still earned a three-year entry-level contract with the Red Wings during the season … Turned pro in 2011-12 and spent the bulk of the year in the ECHL with Toledo (55-2-16-18, minus-9, 101 shots) … Spent the most of the 2012-13 season in the AHL with Grand Rapids but was in and out of the lineup (30-1-5-6, minus-1, 24 shots) … Returned to the AHL with Grand Rapids in 2013-14, but was a healthy scratch on many nights, appearing in just 25 games (25-0-2-2, plus-4, 19 shots) and skating as a forward at times due to the team’s depth on the blue line … Sat 9-of-10 2013 playoff games with Grand Radids … The Red Wings opted not to tender him a qualifying offer following the 2013-14 season, allowing him to walk as an unrestricted free agent.

RWC SCOUTING EXCERPTS
World-class skater who glides around the ice with smooth strides and breathtaking acceleration … Likes to carry the puck and looks good doing it … Good vision and offensive instincts … Has the skill-set to play on the power play … Makes an honest defensive effort … Can play forward … Has a slender build and is quite light on his feet … Often overmatched defensively, despite good intentions … Doesn’t do well in the corners or in front because he’s not strong enough to win battles … Not physical … Struggles when he isn’t playing with confidence.

RWC SCOUT QUOTES
“He’s a high-end skater. Like all kids, he’s got to get stronger, but we like his skating ability. He can take the puck and go end-to-end anytime he wants.” — Red Wings assistant general manager Jim Nill (June 2009) … “His skating is so good — forward, backward, left, right. He can do anything with his feet … He’s a good offensive defenseman. He just needs to get some muscle on him, but he has all the assets to be a good hockey player.” — Oceanic GM Yannick Dumais (June 2009) … “He has to continue to play harder defensively and work on winning the battles, but he has something you just can’t teach — and that’s his skating. He just floats on the ice and moves the puck well. He’s an offensive defenseman who can just fly up the ice.” — Red Wings scout Mark Leach (January 2011).
