STORIES

HISTORY AND HIGHLIGHTS
Suited up for Brynas in the Swedish Hockey League in his draft year in 2009-10 and earned regular shifts, including on the power play (33-4-6-10) … Also lit up the J-20 SuperElit level (19-11-20-31) … Red Wings snapped him up in the second round, 51st overall, in the 2010 draft … Returned to Swedish Hockey League in 2010-11 and was nominated for rookie of the year with a strong season (49-11-16-27), leading all junior-aged SHL players in scoring … Was a top player for fourth-place Sweden at the 2011 IIHF world junior championship (6-2-3-5) … Separated his shoulder in his third playoff game and required off-season surgery … Returned to SHL in 2011-12 and tied for 14th in league scoring — and second on his team — with 39 points in 50 games (50-16-23-39) … Helped Brynas win the 2012 SHL championship with tremendous playoff run (16-4-12-16) … Represented Sweden at the 2012 IIHF world championship (8-0-1-1, 10 shots, 12:39 ATOI) … Emerged as a Top-Eight MVP finalist in 2012-13 with a weak Brynas squad in his third full SHL campaign (53-13-29-42) … Joined Grand Rapids late in regular season (9-0-3-3, 10 shots, plus-3) before departing for the 2013 IIHF world championship, where he played 15 minutes per game before NHL reinforcements arrived and bumped him into the 13th forward spot (10-0-1-1, 14 shots) … Joined Grand Rapids for his first AHL season in 2013-14 and struggled to produce as much as he did in Sweden (57-13-23-36, plus-19, 99 shots) before the Red Wings dealt him along with a second-round pick to Nashville for David Legwand on March 5, 2014 … Jarnkrok was just catching fire in the 16 games prior to the trade (16-3-16-19) but the Red Wings felt they had too much depth at center and that he might require more time on the farm, while their were unconfirmed rumblings Jarnkrok might not be happy with starting the 2014-15 campaign in the AHL … The Hockey News Future Watch ranked Jarnkrok among its top 50 prospects four times from 2010 to 2014 (41st, 32nd, 31st and 41st) … Made his NHL debut with the Predators on March 21, 2014, and finished season in NHL (12-2-7-9, plus-7, 13 shots).

RWC SCOUTING EXCERPTS
Exciting player capable of pulling off highlight-reel moves … A great skater who carries the puck in top flight … Slick, nifty skills and a great “keepaway” player … More of a set-up man than a scorer … Driven player who doesn’t take any shifts off, in the same mold as a Henrik Zetterberg or a Pavel Datsyuk in that regard … Naturally gifted offensively with soft hands … At his best on the power play, when he has the time and space to show off his vast arsenal of skills … Thinks the game well offensively … He’s still on the thin side and won’t make it in the punishing NHL without getting stronger … Likes to be the playmaker, but could stand to put the puck on net more often … Not willing to sacrifice defense for offense, which has, at times, limited his offensive production.

RWC SCOUT QUOTES
“I like to think of him like a Zetterberg. He wants to have the puck, he wants to hold onto the puck all the time, he makes plays and he knows how to score himself.” — Red Wings scout Ari Vuori (June 2010) … “When he can go to the Swedish Elite League (at age 18) and play on the power play and pretty well own the puck for a lot of the time he’s out there, that tells you something. He has a lot of skill. His skating and playmaking ability are the big things with him. He’s really good with the puck and he sees the ice really well.” — Red Wings director of scouting Joe McDonnell (June 2010) … “Jarnkrok really gives it everything he has, every shift … He’s got all the other stuff, like the hockey sense, the hands, and very good work ethic.” — Red Wings director of European scouting Hakan Andersson (April 2011) … “He’s taken a bigger responsibility and all of his good things he does are showing even more this year. The smart thinking, the quick hands, the quick release, the work ethic — that’s always been very good and it’s the same this year — his whole game, he has just taken it to another level.” — Andersson (February 2012) … “He has great hockey sense, very tenacious, a lot of (Henrik) Zetterberg-type qualities. He’s strong on the puck, never gives up on the puck.” — Red Wings assistant GM Jim Nill (May 2012, MLive.com) … “He’s probably the best prospect in our organization overall. Whenever he makes the transition overseas, he’s going to be really exciting to watch at the NHL level.” — Red Wings director of player development Jiri Fischer (December 2012) … “We all feel he’s a top-six forward in the long run. He’s a smart player, he works really hard, he’s got good hands, good hockey sense. Adapting to the (NHL) game, I don’t think it’s going to be a problem.” — Andersson (February 2013) … “In some situations, he’s too easy to contain. If he had another 10 pounds on, he could break away a little easier and get more room for his skill and quick shot because he has a lot of good (offensive assets).” — Andersson (January 2014) … “He’s such a complete player, so, so well-rounded in his game, that he never cheats at all offensively … He’s not willing to (create offense) without sacrificing the defense. That makes the transition for those well-rounded offensive guys a little bit longer.” — Grand Rapids Griffins head coach Jeff Blashill (February 2014) … “This kid has terrific hockey sense, great hands. He’s a really good skater and a really good competitor.” — Predators general manager David Poile (March 2014, Nashville Tennessean) … “I think he’s going to play in the NHL but there’s so many people that he’s behind here that I don’t know when he was going to get the opportunity. Young players get anxious; they want to play in the NHL. If they can’t play in the NHL here they want an opportunity elsewhere. You got to give to get.” — Red Wings general manager Ken Holland (March 2014, MLive.com) … “The stuff he can do, he is as good as anybody in terms of hand-eye coordination and skill in tight places. It’s just a matter of time until he starts putting up big numbers. He’s done everything to improve. He knows he has to work on his strength, his power. He needs to work on his explosiveness.” — Fischer (March 2014, The Hockey News).
