RWC REPORT: Kolosov quietly gets it done
By Matthew Wuest – RedWingsCentral.com / January 26, 2010Sergei Kolosov doesn't show up in many boxscores or headlines. But the Detroit Red Wings hope he shows up in the NHL some day.
The 6-foot-4, 217-pound native of Belarus continues to go about his business quietly in his second American Hockey League season with the Grand Rapids Griffins, playing a reliable defensive game while contributing just a goal and three assists along with a minus-4 rating in 40 games.
"He's been consistent — he plays a consistent game," said Red Wings assistant general manager Jim Nill. "He's a big, steady body who just plays his game. You're hoping he is (an NHL player down the road)."
Kolosov was drafted 151st overall in 2004 and spent two seasons in the United States Hockey League with Cedar Rapids and one more in the top professional league in Belarus. He earned a contract with the Red Wings after impressing them with his solid play at the 2008 IIHF world championship.
The 23-year-old drew a comparison to Andreas Lilja last season from Griffins general manager Bob McNamara, and it's a fair one.
While Kolosov won't be climbing the scoring list anytime soon, he still needs to fine-tune his play with the puck to help lead the breakout.
"You've got to keep working on making a good first pass," Nill explained. "Our game (in Detroit) is built on that and on our team, if you can do that and play solid defensively, 85 per cent of your job is done."
NOTES: Forward Landon Ferraro (Red Deer, WHL) is starting to make something out of a season that has been marred by injuries. He has seven goals and 11 assists for 18 points in his last 14 games ... Goaltenders Thomas McCollum and Jordan Pearce switched spots, with McCollum regaining his job with Grand Rapids and Pearce reassigned to the ECHL with Toledo ... Forward Andrej Nestrasil (Victoriaville, QMJHL) is out for three weeks with a shoulder injury.
