Trio of tryouts announced

By Sarah Lindenau - RedWingsCentral.com / August 18, 2009

The Detroit Red Wings have invited just three tryouts to next month's annual prospects tournament and training camp in Traverse City, Mich.

In years past, the Red Wings have invited more than a dozen. Additional tryouts may be announced with the main camp roster.

The following is a review of the preliminary invites (listed alphabetically with position, age, height, weight, statistics, and 2008-09 team).

Willie Coetzee, F, 19, 5-10, 180, 72-18-24-42-42, Red Deer (WHL). Coetzee, who played on a line with Red Wings first-rounder Landon Ferraro last season, is hard-working player who competes. He was rated 77th among North American draft-eligibles at mid-season by Central Scouting, but slipped to 132nd by year's end. He should put up bigger numbers in 2009-10.

Austin Fyten, F, 18, 6-0, 185, 67-12-13-25-70, Lethbridge (WHL). The 18-year-old center played a limited role in his Western Hockey League rookie season. Fyten is a physical forward with decent speed who, like Coetzee, could blossom offensively next season if he is given an increased role.

Chris Whitley, G, 26, 6-01, 215, 26 gp, 2.58, Lakehead (CIS). Whitley, a rare Canadian university invite, has a contract with the Central Hockey League's Allen Americans. The 26-year-old was last season's Ontario University Athletics MVP and a first-team All-Canadian while playing at Lakehead.
