Red Wings have rare first-round pick

By Matthew Wuest - RedWingsCentral.com / June 20, 2008

The Detroit Red Wings are scheduled to pick 30th overall in the first round of Friday's NHL entry draft at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa.

The action gets underway at 7 p.m. ET on Versus and TSN.

The Red Wings have only had a first-round pick in two of the last seven drafts. They grabbed defenseman Brendan Smith 27th overall last year and selected another blue-liner, Jakub Kindl, 19th overall in 2005.

In the past eight drafts where the Red Wings have held a first-round pick, they've used it on a defenseman, dating back to Anders Eriksson in 1993.

The Red Wings don't have a second-round pick. They dealt the 61st overall pick to the Los Angeles Kings in February for defenseman Brad Stuart.

They pick in the third round (91st overall), fourth (121st), fifth (151st), sixth (181st) and seventh (211th). Rounds 2-7 start Saturday at 10 a.m.
