The Detroit Red Wings will take a look at Pier-Olivier Pelletier as they attempt to shore up their goaltending depth for the next few years.
The Red Wings have invited the former Phoenix Coyotes draft choice to a development camp starting Thursday at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Pelletier will also compete in the Red Wings' annual prospects tournament and training camp in August and September in Traverse City, Mich.
Pelletier, a former member of Canada's under-18 team, spent the past few seasons with the Drummondville Voltigeurs and was among the top goaltenders in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League last season.
The 20-year-old went 29-18 in 51 starts and finished fourth in the QMJHL with a 2.97 goals-against average, while posting one shutout and a .901 save percentage.
Pelletier, drafted in the second round (59th overall) by Phoenix in 2005, didn't get a contract after the Coyotes fired general manager Mike Barnett in May. He reentered the draft but wasn't picked and subsequently became a free agent.
The Red Wings are short on goaltending depth. Dominik Hasek and Chris Osgood will likely man the crease in Detroit, while Jimmy Howard is knocking on the door and could make a move for an NHL job at camp.
Stefan Liv and Logan Koopmans are currently restricted free agents, but Liv has signed with HV-71 of the Swedish Elite League and Koopmans' career -- spent mostly in the East Coast Hockey League -- has been ravaged by injuries and retirement is believed to be a possibility.
The Red Wings wanted to select a goaltender in the NHL entry draft earlier in June, but weren't happy with the talent available.
Pelletier will get a long look at the Red Wings' summer camps and could land an NHL contract to play in the American Hockey League immediately.
