Emmerton gets back on track with productive week ...

Despite some ups and downs, Cory Emmerton continues to be one of the Detroit Red Wings’ most productive prospects this season.

The Kingston Frontenacs forward sprang to life this week, piling up four goals and three assists in three games to climb to 12th in the Ontario Hockey League scoring race. He was also named to the OHL roster for the Canada-Russia Challenge, a set of all-star games held in late November.

Emmerton had 10 points in his first three games this season, followed by an ordinary stretch of eight points in eight games prior to this week.

“He projects as a top-two line guy,” said Red Wings director of amateur scouting Joe McDonnell. “His hockey sense is the biggest thing he offers. He’s a very smart player, and he’s just got to develop and get bigger and stronger. Other than that, he’s a pretty well-rounded player.”

The 6-foot, 190-pounder — a natural center who is playing on the left wing — is on a pace for 116 points, which would surpass his 2005-06 totals of 26 goals and 64 assists for 90 points in 66 games.

He is also a minus-8, though only three players on the Frontenacs roster have positive ratings. Kingston, 4-9, has the second-worst point total in the OHL after entering the year ranked sixth in the CHL.

“They’ve got a real good team and they were supposed to challenge for the division lead, so I’m not sure what’s going on there,” said McDonnell, who primarily scouts in Ontario. “Hopefully they’re snapping out of it.”

Emmerton was drafted in the second round (41st overall) this summer.

HOT: Center Evan McGrath (Grand Rapids, American Hockey League) recorded his first pro points this week, producing a goal and three assists in three games ... Winger Gennady Stolyarov (Dynamo Moscow, Russian Elite League) had a goal and an assist in two games this week, and has quietly amassed four points in nine games ... Forward Darren Helm (Medicine Hat, Western Hockey League) has five goals and 11 assists in his last 11 games ... Goaltender Daniel Larsson (Djurgardens, Swedish Elite League) continues to post spectacular numbers. He has the Sweden’s best save percentage (.941) and the second-best goals-against average (1.68) in 10 starts.

COLD: Winger Igor Grigorenko (Togliatti, Russian Elite League) has just one goal in 14 games ... Goaltender Stefan Liv (Grand Rapids, AHL) has struggled recently. He has allowed 10 goals on his last 84 shots for a .880 save percentage ... Defenseman Jeff May (Prince Albert, WHL) has one point in his last five games after a hot offensive start ... Defenseman Bretton Stamler (Seattle, WHL) has two assists in his past nine games.

NOTES: Center Shawn Matthias (Belleville, OHL) was also named to the OHL’s roster for the Canada-Russia Challenge ... Forward Johan Ryno (Frolunda, Swedish Elite League) transferred to AIK of Sweden’s second level after going pointless in 14 games with Frolunda.
