SCOUT COMMENTS
“If he goes in the second round, we might see a lot of people saying ‘wow’ about this guy a year from now. This kid is just starting to scratch the surface.” — The Hockey News scout quotes (The Hockey News, May 2013) … “He does something to contribute to win every shift. He’s an excellent penalty killer and uses his long reach very well, is smart in his ability to be in the right place. Earlier in the year, I would have called him a puck chaser, but he played with purpose and made a big jump over the second half of the season. I think he could end up becoming a big pro.” — Central Scouting scout Chris Edwards (June 2013, NHL.com) … “He just continued to get better over the course of the year. Put into more situations, killing penalties, on the power play, taking faceoffs. Detroit gives those players time to get better and there’s no telling how good he could be.” — TSN scout Craig Button (June 2013) … “He’s a guy that plays a strong game in terms of his (competitive) level and his determination. He’s a really smart two-way player and he competes hard and plays big.” — Red Wings assistant general manager of hockey administration Ryan Martin (June 2013) … “He might be a third-line player, but he’s got upside to be a second-line winger. Just a real good useful player.” — Red Wings scout Jeff Finley (June 2013) … “He’s got to be a little quicker, a little faster and a little stronger on his feet.” — Owen Sound head coach Greg Ireland (Owen Sound Times, October 2013) … “He’s got his determination, he’s got good size, he’s very smart, he’ll do anything, he’s a heart and soul guy every shift, his (competitive) level is comparable to anybody that has made it (to the NHL). He’s a great guy, 18-year-old captain, you don’t get to see that every day.” — Red Wings director of player development Jiri Fischer (December 2013).

STRENGTHS
A versatile two-way forward who can play both center and right wing … Aggressive on the forecheck and not shy about playing a physical game … Flashes soft hands and offensive talent that has yet to be reflected in his statistics but that could make him more of a power forward than a role player … Can be used in all situations, including power play and penalty kill … Can deliver big hits and block shots … Has athletic genes, as his dad, Paul, played professional football as a running back in the CFL.

WEAKNESSES
Skating is his biggest weakness and needs to come up a notch … Not clear yet whether he has enough skill to be a scoring-line NHLer or more of a role-playing support type.

PROJECTION
Nastasiuk made good progress in 2013-14, upping his offensive production as a young 18-year-old captain of Owen Sound. Already signed to a three-year entry-level contract, Nastasiuk will return to the OHL in 2014-15 and work toward earning a spot with Team Canada at the 2015 IIHF world junior championship. He projects as a hard-nosed defensive winger at the NHL level.
