| SCOUT COMMENTS |
“He’s a guy that’s a bit of a work in progress. He’s a tall rangy gangly kid that doesn’t have any strength but he’s got good hands and he has a nose for the net.” — Red Wings general manager Ken Holland (September 2010) … “He’s pretty gritty, he goes into the hard areas, he competes, and he has a knack — the puck kind of follows him around a little bit. He’s in the right place at the right time, the puck comes to him, he gets it off, and he puts it in..” — Red Wings scout Mark Leach (January 2011).
| STRENGTHS |
Good shooter who loves to fire the puck on net … Possesses a goal-scorer’s mentality, going to the net and playing in traffic … Throws hard hits and gets involved physically … He’s had to earn every opportunity he’s gotten, even at the junior level, and has tremendous work ethic as a result … Showed guts playing through injuries to earn a contract with the Red Wings.
| WEAKNESSES |
Not particularly fast … Was a solid scorer at the junior level, but has limited offensive upside as a pro … Can still get bigger and stronger to make more of a physical impact.
| PROJECTION |
The Red Wings liked Parkes in his draft year but didn’t pick him, then invited him to training camp as a free agent and subsequently signed him. Likened to a gritty Patrick Eaves type, Parkes consistently beats the odds and shouldn’t be overlooked in the Red Wings’ system. Entering the final year of his entry-level contract, he’ll look to make an impact in the AHL with Grand Rapids in 2013-14.
