AWARDS
  • 2010-11 Subway Super Series (Team QMJHL)

HISTORY

  • Played even better in playoffs, with team-leading six goals (7-6-1-7).
  • Passed over in NHL draft after being ranked 197th among North Americans by Central Scouting.
2010-11:
  • Attended Red Wings prospects tournament and training camp in Traverse City as free agent.
  • Made solid impression and signed three-year entry-level contract with Red Wings.
  • Returned to QMJHL and led Montreal in goals, points, power-play goals and shots (60-33-29-62).
  • Production helped team to second-overall, 102-point QMJHL finish.
  • Also had a plus-26 rating, 12 power-play goals and 210 total shots on goal.
  • League leader in goals (15th), power-play goals (T9), scoring (34th) and dangerous shots (seventh).
  • Represented QMJHL in Canada-Russia Subway Super Series (2-0-0-0).
  • Led Montreal in goals in QMJHL post-season (10-6-2-8) but team suffered early second-round exit.
2011-12:
  • In and out of lineup as AHL rookie with Grand Rapids (44-2-6-8, even plus-minus, 66 shots).

2012-13:
  • Spent first half of season in AHL with Grand Rapids before demotion to ECHL’s Toledo.

  • Established himself as a prolific scorer during time in Toledo (19-14-16-30, 86 SOG, plus-6).
  • Pro-rated ECHL goal total (53 in 72 games) would have ranked first in league by 15.
  • Tied for second in Toledo playoff scoring in first-round exit (6-3-2-5, 26 SOG, minus-1).

SCOUT COMMENTS
“He’s a guy that’s a bit of a work in progress. He’s a tall rangy gangly kid that doesn’t have any strength but he’s got good hands and he has a nose for the net.” — Red Wings general manager Ken Holland (September 2010) … “He’s pretty gritty, he goes into the hard areas, he competes, and he has a knack — the puck kind of follows him around a little bit. He’s in the right place at the right time, the puck comes to him, he gets it off, and he puts it in..” — Red Wings scout Mark Leach (January 2011).

STRENGTHS
Good shooter who loves to fire the puck on net … Possesses a goal-scorer’s mentality, going to the net and playing in traffic … Throws hard hits and gets involved physically … He’s had to earn every opportunity he’s gotten, even at the junior level, and has tremendous work ethic as a result … Showed guts playing through injuries to earn a contract with the Red Wings.

WEAKNESSES
Not particularly fast … Was a solid scorer at the junior level, but has limited offensive upside as a pro … Can still get bigger and stronger to make more of a physical impact.

PROJECTION
The Red Wings liked Parkes in his draft year but didn’t pick him, then invited him to training camp as a free agent and subsequently signed him. Likened to a gritty Patrick Eaves type, Parkes consistently beats the odds and shouldn’t be overlooked in the Red Wings’ system. Entering the final year of his entry-level contract, he’ll look to make an impact in the AHL with Grand Rapids in 2013-14.
