SCOUT COMMENTS
“He loves to have the puck, he loves being on the power play, and he shoots the puck all the time. He’s like Jari Kurri. It’s a nice thing to say, but it’s true, and Jari Kurri wasn’t the fastest skater either … He’s a goal-scorer, which is really hard to find these days, but he can also make plays. He has a good shot and he’s so smart at finding openings.” — Red Wings scout Ari Vuori (June 2010) … “He loves to shoot the puck and he can really shoot it. He’s always in the right position. He’s a dangerous player from the tops of the circles down. His skating is not one of his best assets, but the one thing he has is the ability to score goals.” — Red Wings scout Mark Leach (January 2012) … “We might have a poor-man’s Brett Hull on our hands because he has a hell of a shot.” — Red Wings scout Hakan Andersson (January 2012) … “He’s a pure goal-scorer, with a Brett Hull type of shot; loves to shoot the puck, has a great release. Europeans aren’t known as shooters, but he has a Brett Hull type of mentality. Finds open spots, lets it rip.” — Red Wings assistant GM Jim Nill (MLive.com, May 2012) … “Teemu is one of those guys where the puck seems to follow him around the ice … He finds a way to win puck battles. When he’s got the puck on his stick, he’s got a real weapon of a shot. He needs to learn how to play from the defensive side of the puck, how to make stops in the defensive zone.” — Grand Rapids Griffins head coach Jeff Blashill (January 2014, GriffinsHockey.com) … “He can create something out of nothing. He can score goals from everywhere on the ice because he has an extremely dynamic shot — both his slap shot and his wrist shot. When goals are at such a premium in hockey, he’s one of those few guys who only needs one chance to score. His shot is that good. The thing I like about Teemu is he wants to get better. He listens, and he’s working at trying to get better. When he gets better (in the defensive zone), and when you have that ability to score … Boy, you become a commodity in a hurry.” — Blashill (February 2014) … “He’s got to take care of the puck a little bit better, but he can sure shoot it and he had good energy and he can skate well.” — Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock (March 2014, Detroit Free Press) … “Teemu is a goal-scorer. He’s somebody who can play average and still have an impact on the game by shooting one puck in the net. That’s how good of a shot he has. We’re trying to work with him so that his game is real complete. He’s taken lots of steps forward in that area, still needs to continue to improve to show he’s a 60-minute, complete player.” — Blashill (May 2014, foxsports.com).

STRENGTHS
A pure sniper who has an elite, laser-beam shot … Hair-trigger release on his slapper and wrist shot and a cannonading one-timer … Has a surgeon’s precision with his shot placement and can pick a corner … Not only does he have a phenomenal shot, he loves to use it … Can blow a puck into the net almost before a goaltender can even react … Offensive hockey sense is outstanding … Innate knack for finding the quiet scoring areas on the ice, not unlike a Brett Hull or Jari Kurri … A dangerous power-play weapon whose shot is a major asset when he’s on the point or set up for one-timers … Underrated as a playmaker and capable of dishing out some sweet feeds … Although he isn’t big, he has a stocky build and a low center of gravity … Capable of winning puck battles despite his small stature … Wants to play in the NHL and has worked hard to improve the weaknesses in his game.

WEAKNESSES
Skating is fairly average and he lacks the top gear usually required of smaller wingers … Small stature may hinder him at the NHL level … Can spend too much time on the perimeter … Loves scoring and producing offense, but needs to improve his play without the puck and shore things up in the defensive zone … Doesn’t always need to try to blow it by a goaltender — may benefit from taking some steam off his shots when the situation is right for tips and redirections.

PROJECTION
Pulkkinen is hungry for goals and has both the shooting ability and offensive-zone smarts to score plenty of them. As Red Wings director of European scouting Hakan Andersson once said, “we might have a poor-man’s Brett Hull on our hands.” Pulkkinen was one of the most improved prospects in the Red Wings organization in 2013-14, finishing as one of the AHL’s top rookies while leading Grand Rapids in scoring. One of the purest shooters outside of the NHL, Pulkkinen is still learning the defensive ropes in the AHL but could push for significant call-up time in 2014-15.
