- Played Ontario junior A for Toronto St. Mike's Buzzers to preserve NCAA eligibility.
- Finished 14th among OPJAHL defensemen in scoring (39-12-24-36).
- Committed to play NCAA hockey for Wisconsin starting in 2007-08.
- Ranked as high as 28th (TSN) and as low as 68th (Central Scouting) entering the NHL draft.
- Selected in the first round (27th overall) of the NHL draft by the Red Wings.

2007-08:
- Had productive start to freshman NCAA season at Wisconsin (12-2-7-9).
- Named to selection camp for Canada's world junior team but was eventually cut.
- Went down with a bulging disc in his back on Jan. 11 and missed almost three months.
- Returned for Wisconsin's season finale and skated as fourth-line forward.

2008-09:
- Suspended for season-opener because he violated team rules off the ice.
- BadgerBeat.com reported Smith faced four charges stemming from a Sept. 6 citation, including DUI.
- Wisconsin coach Mike Eaves called the suspension "tough love" that "helped a young man grow."
- Cut in favor of 17-year-old Ryan Ellis for one of final spots on Canada's world junior team.
- Started season strong (21-7-11-18) before breaking wrist in January and missing nine games.
- Never fully regained form after getting healthy for the stretch run (10-2-3-5).

- Tallied 11 goals on the power play and had a team-high 76 penalty minutes.
- Tied NCAA record with five assists in 8-1 win over RIT in Frozen Four semifinal in Detroit.
- Held off the scoresheet in a 5-0 loss to Boston College in the NCAA championship.
- Named one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award as the NCAA's most oustanding player.
- Signed three-year entry-level contract in May worth $2.625-million.
- Days after signing, charged with disorderly conduct after a fight outside a Madison home in May.
