HISTORY
2004-05:
  • Didn't get much notice from scouts playing at Sweden's third level.
  • Finished season as Kumla's top scorer and among top scorers in entire league (29-20-18-38).
  • Selected in the middle of the NHL draft (157th overall) by the Red Wings in July.
  • Signed on with Oskarshamn at Sweden's second level in the off-season.
2005-06:
  • Had solid campaign in first season at Sweden's second level (34-13-10-23, plus-9).
  • Performed well in third-line role for Sweden at world junior championship (6-2-3-5).
  • Drew attention from all eight Swedish Elite League playoff teams as free agent.
  • Signed two-year deal with Frolunda of Swedish Elite League in off-season.
2006-07:
  • Underwent off-season back surgery in June and couldn't start rehab until late August.
  • Swedish Elite League rookie year got off to a rough start with Frolunda (14-0-0-0).
  • Transferred to AIK at Sweden's second level and produced well (14-2-7-9).
  • Transferred back to Swedish Elite League with Timra and turned season around (11-4-5-9).
  • Fell back into another slump to close the season (14-1-1-2).
  • Finished rookie campaign with 11 points, 37 shots and a minus-6 rating in 39 games.
  • Made little impact in playoffs as Timra lost in first round to MoDo in seven games (5-0-1-1).
  • Signed three-year entry-level contract with the Red Wings on June 1.
2007-08:
  • Appeared in five NHL pre-season games with Red Wings (5-0-1-1).
  • Started strong in AHL rookie season in Grand Rapids, among the team's leaders (12-3-4-7).
  • Left Grand Rapids in late-November, citing on- and off-ice discomfort.
  • Finished season with Djurgarden of Swedish Elite League in limited role (30-2-7-9).
  • Pointless in five playoff games in Djurgarden's five-game first-round loss to Linkoping.
2008-09:
  • Transferred to AIK, one of the top teams at Sweden's second level.
  • Former NHLer Dick Tarnstrom was among AIK's top players.
  • Went down with a knee injury in early October and didn't return until the new year.
  • Struggled to find his offensive game rest of season (21-5-8-13).
  • Came alive late in playoffs (9-3-5-8) and ended season with a five-point game.
2009-10:
  • Appeared in five NHL pre-season games with Red Wings (5-0-1-1, seven shots).
  • Eschewed AHL job in Grand Rapids to return to Swedish Allsvenskan with AIK.
  • Did very little of note against second-level competition (47-9-11-20).
  • Won 48 percent of 484 faceoffs, had 92 shots and was a plus-7.
  • Also posted ordinary numbers during the post-season (10-1-4-5).

SCOUT COMMENTS
"He needs to work on his skating and get a lot stronger, leg strength and such." — Red Wings assistant general manager Jim Nill (January 2006) ... "I project him as a top two line player. He's a 6-foot-5 guy with very good hands and hockey sense. He's got real upside. He's the guy who has the biggest chance out of Europe to be an impact player in Detroit." — Andersson (January 2007) ... "He might as well go back (to Sweden) and hope he's a player at (age) 24, 25. It's hard to make the NHL when you're 22, 23. We've agreed to go along with what the player and agent want." — Red Wings general manager Ken Holland (November 2007, Macomb Daily).

STRENGTHS
Six-foot-five and still filling out ... Solid two-way game ... Good hockey sense and playmaking ability ... Soft hands and slick puck skills ... Dangerous to contain because of long reach ... Hard worker ... Doesn't give up in races for puck ... Uses his stick smartly.

WEAKNESSES
Skating is not good enough for the NHL, even at his size ... Needs to add strength to his slim 6-foot-5 frame and improve his fitness ... Has not demonstrated a take-charge physical style to match his outstanding size ... Could be more of a power forward if he added a hitting, grinding element.

PROJECTION
Ryno was a highly-touted prospect who was showing positive signs as an AHL rookie in 2007-08 before returning to Sweden after 12 games. Things haven't gone well since. Although he has shown flashes of his upside, he simply hasn't challenged himself to be an elite player and his entry-level contract with the Red Wings has expired. If he has an NHL future, it is unlikely to be in Detroit.
