HISTORY
2008-09
  • Spent 15-year-old season at Choate-Rosemary prep school with goal of playing NCAA.
  • Ranked second overall for the 2009 QMJHL draft but not selected due to his NCAA plan.
2009-10
  • Stayed at Choate-Rosemary prep school for a second season.
  • Selected in the eighth round (137th overall) by Victoriaville in the 2010 QMJHL draft.
2010-11
  • Put up excellent numbers at Choate-Rosemary prep school (22-10-10-20).
  • Strong play in final season before college earned him mid-round draft ratings.
  • Selected in the fifth round (145th overall) of the 2011 draft by the Red Wings.
2011-12
  • Began freshman year at Cornell but struggled to balance athletics with academics.
  • Took leave of absence from Cornell in October to deal with medical issues.
  • Revealed in November that obsessive-compulsive disorder caused him to leave school.
  • Dropped out of Cornell in December to play in the QMJHL for Victoriaville.
  • Played third-line role for team that finished fourth in QMJHL (34-3-2-5, minus-3, 65 shots).
  • Didn’t record a point as Victoriaville was unexpectedly swept in first round (4-0-0-0, minus-2, no shots).

SCOUT COMMENTS
“He’s a very competitive kid who can really shoot the puck. He’s very willing to play in front of the net and score dirty goals, play a physical game, and he just competes really hard.” — Red Wings scout Mark Leach (June 2011).

STRENGTHS
Boasts a heavy, heavy shot and likes to use it … Good upper-body strength helps him win a lot of battles along the wall and down low … Gets involved physically and drives the net … Plays an up-and-down, north-south game … Likes to throw his weight around … Not a high-skill player, but is showing flashes of having a finishing touch … Pays attention to the game’s small details.

WEAKNESSES
While he has a heavy shot, his wind-up is painfully slow and he needs to develop a quicker release … Lumbering skater who has a good stride but lacks lower body strength and needs to pick up his quickness … Offensive upside, outside of his shot, is limited … According to Hudon himself, obsessive-compulsive disorder has brought with it unique challenges for his hockey career.

PROJECTION
Hudon didn’t produce much after reporting to Victoriaville for his QMJHL rookie season in 2011-12. But it’s important to remember he didn’t play a single game for the first two months of the season and admittedly struggled early on with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Entering a contract year with the Red Wings in 2012-13, Hudon must show he can contribute on a QMJHL scoring line.
