SCOUT COMMENTS
“He’s a real intelligent defender. Thinks the game really well and moves the puck really well for a big guy. He’s physical, but I wouldn’t call him punishing … moving forward, I think of him more as a big-body shut-down type of guy.” — Red Wings scout Jeff Finley (June 2013) … “You see how much game sense he has. Typically guys his size are more physical and play that big, more brutal game. Mitch does have some of that, but certainly his biggest asset is his vision and his ability to break pucks out of our end.” — Kelowna Rockets assistant coach Dan Lambert (Kelowna Capital News, December 2013).

STRENGTHS
Tremendous size … Smart defensive player who positions himself well to thwart attacking forwards … Underrated with the puck, moving it quickly and making smart first passes coming out of his zone … Hockey sense on both sides of the puck is above average … Willing to play the body … Understands his limitations … Tough in the sense that he will play through pain … Eager to learn and work on his weaknesses … Terrific attitude and a hard worker on and off the ice.

WEAKNESSES
Skating needs significant work as he is a step slow, even for his size … Although he has an absolutely massive frame, he does need to get stronger and more muscular … Willing to play the body but definitely not the bruiser you might hope for his impressive size.

PROJECTION
The Red Wings love Wheaton’s combination of size and smarts and hope he’ll develop into a stay-at-home defenseman if he puts on muscle and improves his mobility. He’ll return to Kelowna of the WHL in 2014-15 and has one more season to prove he’s worthy of an NHL contract.
