HISTORY
2012-13
  • Entered WHL as a 10th-round bantam pick (207th in 2010) with Kelowna.
  • Appeared in 39 games as a rookie (39-1-7-8, plus-20, 27 PIMs).
  • Went down with a shoulder injury on Jan. 24 and missed rest of regular season.
  • Returned for playoffs despite the fact he required shoulder surgery (4-0-0-0, minus-2).
  • Ranked 69th by Central Scouting for 2013 draft and went in the fifth round, 139th overall, to Detroit.
2013-14
  • Spent season on WHL’s first-place team in Kelowna.
  • Finished fourth in team defense scoring (57-7-21-28).
  • Ranked T5th on Kelowna and T24th in WHL with a plus-31.
  • Missed 15 games to various injuries.

STRENGTHS
Tremendous size … Smart defensive player who positions himself well to thwart attacking forwards … Underrated with the puck, moving it quickly and making smart first passes coming out of his zone … Hockey sense on both sides of the puck is above average … Willing to play the body … Understands his limitations … Tough in the sense that he will play through pain … Eager to learn and work on his weaknesses … Terrific attitude and a hard worker on and off the ice.

WEAKNESSES
Skating needs significant work as he is a step slow, even for his size … Although he has an absolutely massive frame, he does need to get stronger and more muscular … Willing to play the body but definitely not the bruiser you might hope for his impressive size.

PROJECTION
The Red Wings love Wheaton’s combination of size and smarts and hope he’ll develop into a stay-at-home defenseman if he puts on muscle and improves his mobility. He’ll return to Kelowna of the WHL in 2014-15 and has one more season to prove he’s worthy of an NHL contract.
