SCOUT COMMENTS
“He’s got tools — his skills, his shot, his hands, his vision, his strength on the puck. Those are NHL skills. Next year, when he starts the season with everyone else and grows with the pace of the game, the team that drafts him will see what kind of player he can become.” — Mooseheads head coach Dominique Ducharme (metronews.ca, June 2012) … “He has great ability to get into holes, he can shoot the puck, he knows what to do with it once he gets it and he can score. He’s got very good work ethic off the ice, he’s willing to compete, he’s willing to battle, he wants to go into the hard areas and get the puck … and he knows what it’s going to take at the next level.” — Red Wings scout Mark Leach (June 2012) … “Frk is competing his butt off every chance he gets,” said Red Wings director of player “He needs to learn how to eliminate the drive-bys on the back check, how to stop on all the pucks, fight for loose pucks and have a second effort in the offensive zone, and even though on the forecheck when the defenseman gains a little bit of separation carrying the puck, he needs to go after him. Those great habits that Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk have automated, they haven’t come naturally to him.” — Fischer (December 2013) … “He needs to make sure when he gets the puck, he’s got to move his feet. He has a habit of standing still and (playing) the game slow, where in the AHL and certainly in the NHL, you have to play fast and get moving.” — Grand Rapids Griffins head coach Jeff Blashill (February 2014).

STRENGTHS
Boasts an absolute cannon of a shot that can terrorize opposing goaltenders … Screaming one-timer … Uses his good-sized frame to protect the puck … Excellent hands for scoring and passing … Can beat players 1-on-1 with his stick skills … Good vision and offensive awareness … Right-handed shot on right wing, but has also proven to be effective on the left side … Extremely dangerous on power plays, where coaches like to utilize him on the point for his intimidating shot.

WEAKNESSES
Has heavy feet and is a ponderous skater … Does not play with pace and gets caught standing still far too often — with and without the puck … Takes ill-timed, undisciplined, retaliatory penalties … Shot accuracy could improve … Could shoot more, and could take some steam off his shots to improve their accuracy or to allow teammates to tip them in … Doesn’t back-check as hard or as much as he should and needs a great deal of improvement defensively … Conditioning needs to improve.

PROJECTION
Frk was a high-scoring junior player whose statistics were inflated playing on a powerhouse team alongside superstar 17-year-olds Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin. As an AHL rookie in 2013-14, Frk’s heavy feet and inability to play at a fast pace prevented him from establishing himself as a regular in Grand Rapids. He’ll return to the AHL in 2014-15 and needs to show up ready to prove he’s worthy of a scoring-line job and regular ice time on the power play.
