SCOUT COMMENTS
"He's really come along. He's playing a lot smarter. Before, he was all over the place, when we first drafted him. We weren't sure what type of form he had, what his style was, but now, he's a lot more composed. He plays his angles better and there aren't as many rebounds." — Red Wings part-time Western scout Marty Stein (December 2003).

STRENGTHS
Very good size for a goaltender ... Plays a combination style and likes to go down in the butterfly ... Extremely quick with fantastic anticipation ... Reads plays well when he's on his game ... Tough competitor who plays well in traffic ... Excellent dedication ... Well-liked by his teammates.

WEAKNESSES
Repeated injuries have completely stalled his development ... Needs to improve his consistency.

PROJECTION
Koopmans has started just 64 games in four seasons (16 per season) under contract with the Red Wings, battling injuries and struggling for time on a talented depth chart. He was contemplating retirement at one point, then missed the entire 2007-08 season recovering from hernia surgery. Retirement will remain an option for Koopmans in the off-season, unless the Red Wings re-sign him.
