  • Called up to Detroit as a Black Ace (spare who doesn't play) for the NHL playoff run.

SCOUT COMMENTS
"Down the road, I would think he's going to be a top-four guy." — Red Wings director of amateur scouting Joe McDonnell (October 2006) ... "At times he wants to carry the puck and his decision-making sometimes is a little bit questionable and that's why his plus-minus is where it is. He's shown flashes. He's better when he has less time with the puck because he does it on instinct — he just moves it quickly. The more time and space that he has, the more he wants to think it through, rather than just react." — Grand Rapids Griffins general manager Bob McNamara (January 2008) ... "All aspects of his game, he’s taken up a notch and he seems a lot more comfortable with the puck on his stick and a lot more comfortable in terms of making passes. There was a lot more uncertainty last year. He’s definitely taken it to another level." — McNamara (November 2008).

STRENGTHS
Terrific all-around set of natural tools ... Skating and offensive skills are biggest strengths ... Moves well on his skates ... Good acceleration and speed ... Carries the puck well ... Supports offense with great vision, good passing ability ... Hard, accurate point shot ... Has the skills to man the power-play point ... Flashes a nasty edge and isn't afraid to get involved, when called upon.

WEAKNESSES
Prone to frustrating, untimely giveaways coming out of the defensive zone ... Decision-making and hockey sense continues to be a concern ... Struggles with inconsistency ... Despite excellent size, isn't the imposing physical force that he could be.

PROJECTION
Kindl has the tools to be a top-notch NHLer, but still has some wrinkles that need to be ironed out. The Red Wings believe he plays better with better players, but his slow finish to 2008-09 along with the organization's defensive depth means he will likely spend another season in the AHL with Grand Rapids. A strong, consistent 2009-10 would be a big step in his development.
