| SCOUT COMMENTS |
“He’s a big body, big blocker, plays big, and he’s very cool, very calm in the net … He always came up big in pressure situations and that’s one of the things we liked about him.” — Red Wings assistant general manager Jim Nill (April 2009) … “It’s been great that Jordan has earned this opportunity (as AHL starter), he just wasn’t given it. He earned his spot. He’s taken it and now rolled with it, and he keeps producing points for us. Is it a surprise? No, it was expected of him – he’s a good young goaltender.” — Grand Rapids Griffins head coach Curt Fraser (March 2011, GriffinsHockey.com).
| STRENGTHS |
Has the size that has become a trend for NHL goaltenders … Built a reputation at Notre Dame as a big-game, big-save goaltender, and the Red Wings took notice … Relaxed and composed … Doesn’t get rattled … Steady and consistent … Doesn’t get down on himself … Intelligent off the ice with a future in medicine and a willing, capable learner on the ice.
| WEAKNESSES |
Needs to show as a pro that he has the quickness and lateral movement to go along with his good-sized frame … Can’t rely solely on his size to fill the net and intimidate shooters.
| PROJECTION |
Pearce has done pretty well for himself as a pro and — by the time his contract expires in 2013 — will have earned somewhere in the vicinity of half a million dollars since signing in 2009. With rising star Petr Mrazek ready to vie for an AHL job in 2012-13, it’s not clear where Pearce will end up. But he’s a good leader and gives the Red Wings solid organizational depth. |
