2007-08:

  • Led Hasten and the club’s 10-team division in scoring.
  • Production slipped in second half after arrival of new coach at mid-season.
  • On his third time through the NHL draft, went to Detroit with the last pick (211th overall) in June.
  • Signed with Timra of the Swedish Elite League in off-season.
2008-09:
  • Uneventful Swedish Elite League rookie season, getting little ice time with Timra (40-2-1-3).
  • Also played 13 games for Sundsvall at Sweden’s second level (13-1-5-6).
2009-10:
  • Returned to Timra for second Swedish Elite League season and did little to impress (23-0-1-1).
  • Also played in Swedish Allsvenskan with Sundsvall but posted underwhelming numbers (36-3-13-16).
2010-11:
  • Dropped down to Sweden’s third level (Division I) with Hasten and lit it up (18-9-13-22).
  • Also saw time (10-2-1-3) in Hasten’s failed bid to qualify for the Sweden’s second level (Allsvenskan).

SCOUT COMMENTS
“No. 1 skill is by far hockey sense. Very good setup guy. In (Sweden’s third-tier league) a lot of players are not that great, including who he played with. If he had played with a good winger he could have had another 30 points. There were times he’d make plays and his winger wasn’t even close to being ready for the puck. He’d be looking somewhere else with his stick up in the air and there was the puck, in front of him, and the net was open, and he’d get all surprised. Skating is fine, hands are good, obviously has to fill out.” — Red Wings director of European scouting Hakan Andersson (June 2008) … He’s a guy who needs strength. He’s a big-time talent, he can make plays other guys can’t make, but he’s not well-trained enough to play the up-and-down game.” — Andersson (November 2009).

STRENGTHS
Great mind for the game that can’t be taught … Primarily a set-up man who will work well with a tough, scoring winger … Does plenty of damage when he has time and space on the power play … Has shown flashes of good skating and puck skills early in his career.

WEAKNESSES
Extremely slight and had trouble gaining weight before being drafted because of gluten intolerance … Wildcard pick because he played in a mediocre league against weak competition, and has yet to pass the test of facing faster, stronger players in the Swedish Elite League and other high levels.

PROJECTION
Samuelsson was selected with the last pick in the draft in the hopes he might emerge as a skilled playmaker, but for a variety of reasons, he hasn’t panned out as hoped. He is no longer in the Red Wings’ plans and will likely finish his career in Europe.
