SCOUT COMMENTS
“He’s probably the most athletic goalie I’ve ever seen. He’s incredibly swift; his ability to get up and down and his angles are impressive.” — Lincoln Stars head coach Jim McGroarty (October 2009, yourottawaregion.com) … “They (the Red Wings) certainly have opportunity and (Coreau) will be given every opportunity to grow as a goalie and I have every confidence that he will. They are going to do everything they can to bring him along and in my opinion, someday he’ll be playing goal for Detroit.” — Northern Michigan head coach Walt Kyle (April 2013, miningjournal.net).

STRENGTHS
According to Red Line Report, Coreau was a “stylistic mess” in his draft year, but “cleaned up his technique” and is “smooth and athletic” … Athleticism stands out for his size … Fits the mold of larger goaltenders, who have taken over the NHL over the past decade … Confident with good mental toughness … Dedicated to fitness and got much stronger after reporting to Northern Michigan as a skinny freshman … Mature and intelligent off the ice as one of Northern Michigan’s top scholar-athletes.

WEAKNESSES
Continued work is needed on his technique and fundamentals, as he won’t be able to rely on his athleticism as much in the professional ranks.

PROJECTION
Coreau was ranked as one of the top college free-agents in 2013 and chose the Red Wings over seven other NHL suitors. He gives them an athletic, giant-sized stopper who could be molded into an NHL goaltender. As an AHL rookie in 2013-14, Coreau will battle Thomas McCollum for the right to back up Petr Mrazek but could also see ECHL time with Toledo.
