SCOUT COMMENTS
“He’s a real good skater, moves the puck well, makes a real good first pass, and he’s just a guy that obviously has to develop and get stronger. He’s a long-term project but we think he has a lot of upside.” — Red Wings director of scouting Joe McDonnell (June 2012).
STRENGTHS
Although listed at 6-foot-2 on draft day, he’s actually 6-foot-4 and has an NHL frame … Excellent skating ability and can really get around the ice … Very steady in his own zone, makes a good first pass … Versatile and can play at even strength and on both special teams, although more of a fill-in guy on the power play … Good vision and hockey sense.
WEAKNESSES
Capable on the power play but doesn’t project as a big point-getter … Could be more physical and will need to get harder to play against to be an NHL stay-at-homer … Still quite skinny despite his tall frame and needs to get stronger.
PROJECTION
De Haas was a late-round attempt at getting a safe, steady depth defenseman with excellent size and mobility. After a solid junior A season in the BCHL, De Haas is headed to the NCAA Division I ranks with Clarkson in 2013-14. The Red Wings have until 2017 to sign him.
