SCOUT COMMENTS
“He’s one of those goalies who looks bigger in the net. He covers the net well, he covers the bottom of the net real well and he’s very athletic.” — Red Wings director of scouting Joe McDonnell (June 2012) … “He’s rock solid — he makes good saves, he makes spectacular saves, he doesn’t get out of position and he plays a real steady game. He’s a bit of an underdog … but he’s a battler who competes really hard.” — TSN analyst Ray Ferraro (December 2013) … “He’s super competitive and he wants to be in high-pressure situations where a lot is at stake. Those are two traits that every elite goaltender has to have … He’s very athletic, and he is a leader.” — Red Wings director of player development Jiri Fischer (December 2013).

STRENGTHS
Not huge, but has average to slightly above average build for a goaltender … Covers a lot of net, especially down low … Athletic … Calm in the net and isn’t fazed by pressure … Competitive battler who works hard to stop second chances … Moves puck well.

WEAKNESSES
Can get caught trying to do too much and needs to keep his game simple rely on his fundamentals … Has never posted elite numbers but has always backstopped mediocre teams.

PROJECTION
The Red Wings had Paterson ranked as the fourth-best goaltender available in the 2012 NHL draft and were happy to get him in the third round, 80th overall. He hasn’t disappointed, posting two solid OHL campaigns and earning a spot on Canada’s world junior team. Already signed to a three-year entry-level contract, Paterson likely won’t see much AHL time in Grand Rapids in 2014-15 due to the presence of Petr Mrazek and Thomas McCollum, but he could be the No. 1 man in the ECHL with Toledo.
