| SCOUT COMMENTS |
| “He’s one of those goalies who looks bigger in the net. He covers the net well, he covers the bottom of the net real well and he’s very athletic.” — Red Wings director of scouting Joe McDonnell (June 2012) … “He’s rock solid — he makes good saves, he makes spectacular saves, he doesn’t get out of position and he plays a real steady game. He’s a bit of an underdog … but he’s a battler who competes really hard.” — TSN analyst Ray Ferraro (December 2013).
|
| STRENGTHS |
| Not huge, but has average to slightly above average build for a goaltender … Covers a lot of net, especially down low … Athletic … Calm in the net and isn’t fazed by pressure … Competitive battler who works hard to stop second chances … Moves puck well. |
| WEAKNESSES |
| Needs to improve his consistency and prove the second half of his draft year wasn’t a blip … Can get caught trying to do too much and needs to keep his game simple rely on his fundamentals. |
| PROJECTION |
| The Red Wings had Paterson ranked as the fourth-best goaltender available in the 2012 NHL draft, just outside the first round. Understandably, they were happy to get him in the third round, 80th overall, and he made good strides in 2012-13. Paterson will return to OHL with Saginaw in 2013-14 and will vie for Canada’s starting job at the 2014 IIHF world junior championship. |
