SCOUT COMMENTS
“He really has talent with the puck. His best skills are his hockey sense and his hands.” — Red Wings director of European scouting Hakan Andersson (June 2013) … “His strength isn’t there, but hockey sense and skill is right up there. I’m not exaggerating. Those are his main attributes. It doesn’t hurt that he’s 6-foot-3. He can make plays and beat you 1-on-1, so that’s exciting, but there’s a long way to go.” — Andersson (January 2014).

STRENGTHS
Extremely talented with the puck … Good vision and playmaking ability … Smart with good hockey sense … Works hard, pursuing the puck when he doesn’t happen.

WEAKNESSES
Despite being quite tall, Melen is thin and has a noticeable lack of muscle … Needs to be more confident in his scoring ability … Must improve significantly in the defensive end.

PROJECTION
Melen is a skilled forward who has never played at a high level and he suffered a big setback early in the 2013-14 when he was diagnosed with an acute respiratory disease. The Red Wings have three more years to monitor his progress and sign him. He’s expected to join Vaxjo at the J-20 SuperElit level in 2014-15 and will look to get healthy and bounce back.
