SCOUT COMMENTS
"Based on what we've seen so far, he probably needs a lot more time in Grand Rapids, but he's not prepared for that commitment, for, among other things, major financial reasons. We'll bring him here and take it a day at a time. I can't tell you where we're going ot be with Igor one month from now. There's no guarantees. I'm not promising anybody a roster spot or minutes. It's all to be earned. I thought he was average in the rookie tournament. He got better as training camp wore on. He showed signs in the exhibition season. You could see his hands, but the pace of the game was too much. How much has changed with him (since then)? Probably not a whole lot. He hasn't set that team or that league on fire. It's going to be a process. Igor will be evaluated every day in practice. Where does he fit? It's up to the player to make some adjustments. I don't think our entire organization has to adjust to make Igor a player. He has to figure out a way to best help the Detroit Red Wings win. Can he make the adjustment? Is he prepared to make the adjustment?" — Red Wings general manager Ken Holland (October 22, 2007, MLive.com) ... "He would like to be a Red Wing. We've told him we're going to watch him all winter. He now knows what the NHL is all about. I think if he gets in better shape and gets a quick step ... he's got hands, he's got hockey sense. But he's got to give himself a chance to play to his strengths. If you can't get to the puck ... " — Holland (October 27, 2007, Detroit Free Press) ... "I think it's time to move on." — Holland (May 2008, Macomb Daily).

STRENGTHS
Excellent puck-control and puck-protection skills ... Tricky in 1-on-1 situations ... Opportunistic scorer with a good wrist shot ... Terrific hockey sense ... Intelligent offensively and equally capable of scoring and setting up linemates ... Great on power play ... Strong in traffic ... Not afraid of going into traffic areas ... Stocky with rock-solid balance ... Intense.

WEAKNESSES
Simply can't keep up with the NHL game after a car accident robbed him of at least a full skating gear ... Wasn't in NHL shape when he came to Detroit's training camp in 2007 ... Sometimes lacks discipline and can take untimely penalties ... Could elevate his defensive play.

PROJECTION
Grigorenko came to his first NHL training camp in 2007 in disappointing physical condition and struggled. After demotions to the AHL on Oct. 1 and 27, he exercised an escape clause in his contract to return to Russia. Red Wings GM Ken Holland told Detroit media in May, "I think it's time to move on," with regard to Grigorenko, meaning the long-time prospect will likely be allowed to become a free agent.
