SCOUT COMMENTS
“He’s going to be a captain in the NHL, I really believe that.” — NBC analyst Pierre McGuire (June 2014) … “Think of Darren Helm but better scoring ability. He’s got that type of disruptive speed. He comes at you defensively. He comes at you offensively. He played (hurt) at the (world) U-18 tournament where USA won gold and he just kept playing through it. He’s got guts, he’s got lots of skill, lots of speed.” — TSN scout Craig Button (June 2014) … “Guaranteed player, heart-and-soul kid. He’ll wear a letter on his jersey some day. Plays with pace and he’s a powerful skater. You might only get a third-liner, but his work ethic is great. NHL coaches are going to love him.” — Anonymous NHL scout (The Hockey News, May 2014) … “He’s a tremendous, exceptional skater with great speed, a heart-and-soul guy who just plays the game hard, the right way, all the time … He can score goals, he can distribute the puck and play below the circle … For sure we have a third-line guy that is a character guy and will wear a letter for you, and then you hope there’s enough offense that maybe he’s a second-line guy in time … He’s just going to be a good NHL player for us. He’s the kind of guy you win with.” — Red Wings chief scout Jeff Finley (June 2014).

STRENGTHS
Speed kills, and Larkin has it in spades, arguably the best skater in his draft class … TSN scout Craig Button compares Larkin’s skating abillity to that of Darren Helm … A good two-way center who plays with pace … Uses his foot-speed to attack offensively and disrupt defensively … Gives a true, hard-working, consistent effort every night, rarely going unnoticed and helping his team win regardless of whether he scores … The Red Wings like his offensive upside, impressed with his playmaking ability, puck skills down low and willingness to drive to the net … Plays fearlessly with tremendous heart, gutting out injuries and doing whatever it takes to help his team win … Grew up idolizing Steve Yzerman, and not surprisingly, is touted for his leadership abilities and pegged by many as a potential future NHL captain.

WEAKNESSES
Although he’s as close to a sure-fire NHLer as you’ll find at age 17 and 18 in the draft, the knock on him from most scouting authorities is that he might not have the hands or offensive upside to be more than a third-liner … Like Darren Helm, with his speed and attacking style, there’s a chance he could be prone to injury, although he has no history of that at this early stage.

PROJECTION
With their highest draft choice since Martin Lapointe in 1991, the Red Wings nabbed a gutsy two-way forward with blazing speed with the No. 15 pick in the 2014 NHL draft. It’s going to take a year or two to see how much offensive upside Larkin has, but he projects as a second- or third-line forward who can contribute in all facets of the game. He’s headed to the University of Michigan to play for veteran head coach Red Berensen and the Red Wings have until 2018 to sign him.
