SCOUT COMMENTS
“He’s got, in my opinion, an NHL shot and release. He’s got a great shot. Hopefully, he’ll be a scorer. He has the shot to be a scorer and he has the natural offensive instincts to be a scorer. He knows where to go, how to find space, and he’s creative … He plays enough of a two-way game that if he’s not a scorer, he has the ability to be a third-line type of guy.” — Red Wings scout Jeff Finley (June 2013).

STRENGTHS
Tremendous shot with good velocity and a quick release … Excellent offensive instincts, with a knack for finding openings to score … Plays a north-south game and battles hard for the puck … Good skater … Pays attention in his own zone … Versatile enough to play center and both wings.

WEAKNESSES
Good height but extremely thin and lacking strength, allowing him to get easily out-muscled … Although he has good offensive tools, he has yet to break out offensively at any level and it’s not clear if he’ll live up to his potential as a scorer … Doesn’t play with much of an edge.

PROJECTION
Pope is a long-term project who has good offensive skills and goal-scoring ability. He has potential as a scorer but could also turn into a third-line type if he doesn’t develop as hoped offensively. After a productive final season in the BCHL in West Kelowna, Pope is headed to the NCAA at Nebraska-Omaha in 2014-15. The Red Wings don’t have to sign him until 2018.
