SCOUT COMMENTS
"He's a very good puck-moving defenseman. He's got (Niklas) Kronwall skills as far as moving the puck and everything else." — Red Wings assistant general manager Jim Nill (May 2004) ... "We watched him at the Sweden Games (with the Czech Republic national team in 2005-06) and he's got to get stronger, a lot stronger (before he'll get a contract)." — Nill (June 2006).

STRENGTHS
Smooth, mobile skater ... Smart offensive defenseman with good hockey sense ... Excellent passer and puck-mover ... Good, hard point shot ... Makes good decisions as to when to join the rush ... Strong positional player in his own zone.

WEAKNESSES
Plays a finesse game and doesn't get involved much physically ... Will likely have trouble handling more powerful players at the pro level if he ever plays in North America ... Struggles in battles in front of the net and in the corners ... Not much muscle to his slender build.

PROJECTION
Blatak, a 2001 draft pick, is a talented offensive defenseman with a proven European track record, but won't get a contract from the Red Wings until he adds significant muscle. The Red Wings will finally lose the rights to Blatak if they don't sign him following the 2008-09 season.
