| SCOUT COMMENTS |
| “He’s not very offensive but he’s smart moving the puck. I would say he’s a puck-moving defenseman. He can play the power play and in general he has good tools to play in the NHL one day.” — Red Wings scout Nikolai Vakourov (June 2011) … “He’s a bit like (Mattias Backman). He needs to fill out, but he’s good with the puck and he’s a right-hand shot. They both have potential to come in and do something with puck. They won’t just be 6-7 defensemen who bang it off the glass. I’m convinced he can be a very good defenseman for Grand Rapids next season and where he takes it from there, I don’t know.” — Red Wings director of European scouting Hakan Andersson (January 2013).
|
| STRENGTHS |
| Skating fuels his game, as he moves well forward and backward … Gets the puck out of his zone effectively via a good first pass or lugging it himself … Won’t be a high-end point producer but is capable offensively and is more than just a stay-at-homer … Right-shooting defenseman are becoming more rare, which adds to Marchenko’s value … A hard worker and a good leader. |
| WEAKNESSES |
| Has struggled with injuries and health problems so far in his young career and needs to avoid the injury bug … Skinny and needs to add more strength … Doesn’t have a hard shot … So-called “Russian factor” is always a concern with trying to get players away from the KHL, although the Red Wings say he wants to come to North America and work toward an NHL job. |
| PROJECTION |
| Marchenko is an interesting final-round pick who could surprise people and turn into a player down the line. Injuries have plagued Marchenko through the years, but he put together a healthy 2012-13 campaign and is expected to sign with the Red Wings and play in the AHL with Grand Rapids in 2013-14. He projects as a two-way puck-moving defenseman at the NHL level. |
