Another comeback

Unread postby PokerAndPucks on Sun Nov 20, 2011 5:13 pm

Lions down 13 at halftime, at the 2 minute warning looks like they're going to win by 14. Glad to see Kevin smith back and healthy for the first time in a couple years. 140 yards on the ground, another 61 receiving and 3 TDs, Stafford 5 TD passes to 5 different receivers.
Reggie Dunlop: What are you guys doing?
Steve Hanson: Puttin' on the foil!
Jeff Hanson: Every game!
Jack Hanson: Yeah, you want some?

none of them to CJ I believe? this team is running out of ways to make me really pessimistic and then win and get me pumped again.

Good thing we benched Stafford.

When we win, it's because we're not gun shy. The offensive play caller on this team needs to be drugged and locked in a trunk for the duration of the game. Look at the plays when we win games-we aren't afraid to throw down field. When we lose, we lose because we run 3 yard passing routes on 3rd and 12. We throw broken screens on long, we just dink and dunk ourselves into the shithouse and wind up losing games we should've won. When we go downfield with the ball, it ends up positive way more often than it does negative. Some play callers are just flat out afraid to take any kind of risk.

Wait, what...

I thought this was gonna be a messy messy game after the first interceptions. I'm glad Stafford proved that the finger isn't bothering him as much as I thought.

1) Short passes gets the QB and the rest of the offense into a rhythm and brings the safeties up, both of which makes it easier to hit the down field passes.

2) The offense started clicking when Stafford started throwing the underneath routes. They spent most of the first quarter trying to throw it down field.

3) I'm hoping you were being sarcastic about Stafford.

I know short passes have a purpose but we clearly were overusing it. When we're running stupid short passes late in the game when we're trying to win that's just dumb. We've had all game to get him into a rhythm, we've had all game to play the safety game and we're dinking and dunking ourselves into losses. On the same token, we can't run. When you can't run you should be going deep to get the safeties to play back. It's a case of right plays, wrong times.

This game the underneath routes worked, but this was the one exception. Most other losses we had completely horrible offensive play calling. When it was close late, we scored because we weren't afraid to take shots to Young and Scheffler.

And yeah I was sarcastic, because we didn't actually bench him.

On another note, Scheffler rocks. I've thought very highly of him ever since I saw him as a rookie in Denver. He's got some of the softest hands around.

Just look at Stafford's face, if he looks determined the Lions are going to win. If he has that blank stare on his face he's probably drugged and we don't have a chance in hell. The second interception was not his fault at all, the first one was.
Kevin smith looks so much better than he did in previous years, he isn't shying away from contact.
Is it wrong that I hope for Scheffler to score just so I can see his TD dance?

Pretty pathetic to be down by 17 points to the panthers at any point. If they play like against Green Bay on thursday the game will be well over by halftime.
What do the Leafs and the Titanic have in common? They both look good until they hit the ice.
