Question for the Michigan Men...

What do you think of Charlie Strong as Lloyd's replacement?

He seems to have a fine resume, despite the fact that he coached for the Lions for a spell.

He’s a defensive specialist and everybody knows Bo loved his defenses.

Charlie was a player for the job at MSU, the one that went to Dantonio.

Read his bio here:

Read about his pleasant personality here:

According to this guy, he seems to be at the top of the list for a HC job someplace:

I didn’t know that Charlie Strong was one of only two assistants under Ron Zook at Florida who were retained by Urban Meyer when he took over the program (three other assistants went with Zook to Illionois).

Good for Urban. And good for Charlie, too. Under Meyer, Strong won a national championship as defensive coordinator, just like Dantonio did when he was DC for Ohio State under Tressel.

Seems to have a good attitude about the whole “black coach thing,” too:

What say you, Bill and Mary Sue?

ETA:

Nevermind…

Now that I think about it, it doesn’t make sense that a guy (Charlie Strong) whose defense smothered Troy Smith and the Ohio State offense in the national championship game last year would be welcome in Ann Arbor.

Nor would it make sense for Michigan to have a head coach with, um, strong recruiting inroads in talent-rich Florida, either.

Disregard my question, Bill and Mary Sue...

You're welcome, of course.

It's just that somebody up-thread asked who the qualified black candidates would be for the head coaching job at Michigan. I posted a link--somewhat outdated, to be sure, but still--that listed them and nobody responded.

After giving that list the once-over and doing a little research on a few, I determined that Charlie Strong would be a good candidate for Michigan.

No, he doesn't have head coaching experience (but then, how many black coaches do?) other than that one game as a fill-in after Zook left for Illinois, but he's a national championship DC with a big notch on his belt of stuffing the Troy Smith-led Buckeyes.

That would sell nicely in A2, I would think.

And, as I already mentioned, he has contacts and presumably good relationships with high school coaches and administrators in Florida--maybe Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana, too. Think about some of that SEC/ACC speed coming north to play in The Big House on Saturdays, eh?

Look, I realize it's the weekend and folks here don't read the board as much as they do during the week, but, hey...somebody asked for names and I delivered.

So far, though, crickets....

But would he be interested in Michigan? They won't hire someone unless they're committed to staying in AA long term. Strong might look to take the Michigan job and then jump at the first top SEC team that has an opening. Other than that, he might make a good candidate. Whether he's on Martin's list of 30 names is another story, but Strong could always make a call to AA to let them know he's interested.

Are you kidding? The head coaching job at friggin' Michigan? Yeah, I suspect he would be interested, more than just a little.

He lived in Michigan for a spell when he was with the Lions. And if you look at his resume, he was a Notre Dame assistant, for awhile, too. So, he's obviously not opposed to living and coaching in the northern climate.

As far as him calling A2 to inquire about the job, I believe both Lloyd and Bill Martin said that one does not seek the Michigan job, it seeks you (as arrogant as that sounds).

There might be a little code-speak in that comment. Hard to tell for sure.

Not everyone wants to be at Michigan. Some people prefer SEC schools, and Brian Kelly once said his dream job is at Boston College.

I'm trusting that they will hire the best coach available, and that he will want to stay at Michigan 10+ years and won't pull a Saban.

I know you are only a MSU grad, but I thought even in East Lansing they expected their students to have a fundamental understanding of basic arithmetic :D

(8/12 = not 75%)
