Roller Hockey

Just wondering if anyone out there is on a roller hockey team? If so where do you play and how do you like the facility?

I play at the Skate Zone in Rochester. I like the place but their refs have attitude issues.

I play at Lazerskate, north of Grand Rapids. It's a good facility, decent competition and they do a pretty good job of making sure players aren't playing in the lower division when they should be in the upper. They could have a lot more adult leagues, but they have kids playing most nights of the week. Most of the games are pretty clean and you don't see the cheap shots and fights that you see in other places (like Rivertown in GR where the refs have been known to challenge players to a fight in the middle of the game, and is just a craphole anyway). The league fee is reasonable, $1100 a team, with a $100 discount if you're paid by week 5. It's a 10 game regular season with a 4 game round robin style "playoff" at the end, so you get 14 games. The owners are all cool people too.

The only real knock I have on Lazerskate is the officiating sucks. The game we played tonight came real close to erupting into some fights because everything was getting let go. I knocked a guy down near the boards, and he grabbed my stick with one hand and wrapped his other arm around me leg and there was no call. After the puck went to the other end of the ice, he still wouldn't let go, so I bent over and punched him. Again, no call, but he let go of me. Later I was blatantly tripped and the ref said "you fell down." No kidding I fell down when he pulled my feet out from under me, that why it was TRIPPING.

I'll never play at Rivertown, the other place in GR, again. The locker rooms are crappy, the rink is small, the officiating is the worst I've ever seen anywhere, every game is filled with cheap shots and fights, and they let teams play down a division from where they should be playing.

The closest thing that you have is Dumars or the Sports Forum at 15 and Harper.

It's cheaper and a lot easier to find a team.

The officiating at the Skate Zone is so bad, that I got a penatly for interference when I had the puck. The puck was coming down the boards and I was skating towards the board to cut it off, a guy on there team was skating along the boards and I got to it first. He got there a second after I, and he ran into me after I had possesion. I got called because they said that I got in his way. It was unbelievable.

Roller is indeed cheaper, and that is certainly a legitimate reason for one to get into it. But, in my experience, it definitely isn't any easier to find a team than in ice hockey. And just a heads up, reffing is pretty lousy everywhere (outside of juniors, college, and the pros; although, even that can be debated).

It's really really bad at every place. Lazerskate hired a couple new refs and they worked my game last night and did a decent job. The only thing that they missed was once they were both watching the play instead of the back side ref watching away. Also one of my players had his helmet ripped off his head and got a small cut. He jumped up and wanted to beat the crap out of the guy who did it, and apparently the ref thought he took his own helmet off because he was going to get the only penalty. Fortunately one of the owners was watching the game and talked to the ref so they both got 2 for roughing.
