Andrej Nestrasil has very quietly emerged as one of the Grand Rapids Griffins’ top performers.

The 23-year-old center/winger has helped the Griffins jump out to a 2-0 series lead against the Abbotsford Heat in the AHL Western Conference quarterfinal, tied for the team scoring lead with two goals and two assists along with a plus-4 rating.

He’s pretty much picked up where he left off at the end of the regular season. In his final 22 games, Nestrasil averaged a point per game with 11 goals and 11 assists for 22 points along with a plus-6 rating.

Originally drafted in the third round (75th overall) in the 2009 draft by the Red Wings, Nestrasil needed to prove himself in the final year of his three-year entry-level contract. His emergence will very likely earn him a one- or two-year contract extension to provide solid minor-league depth.

The 6-foot-3 210-pounder never quite lived up to expectations in the QMJHL after being drafted and he spent the majority of his first two professional seasons in the ECHL with the Toledo Walleye.

But this season, he worked his way up the depth chart in Grand Rapids. He had just 13 points in his first 48 games as a third- and fourth-liner but his role gradually expanded as players such as Luke Glendening, Riley Sheahan and Calle Jarnkrok moved on.

Nestrasil will need to clear waivers to be assigned to the Griffins next season but he’ll be an organizational asset with his size, well-rounded skill-set and work ethic.

NOTES: The Griffins’ series with the Heat continues in Grand Rapids with games on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday (if necessary) … Defenseman Ryan Sproul (Grand Rapids, AHL) is tied with Nestrasil for the team lead. He has two goals and two assists … Goaltender Petr Mrazek (Grand Rapids, AHL) has been close to unbeatable, stopping 70 of 73 shots … Defenseman Adam Almquist (Grand Rapids, AHL) missed Game 2 with an injury … Forwards Tomas Jurco and Riley Sheahan have been demoted to Grand Rapids after spending the second half of the season on the Red Wings roster. Luke Glendening was not demoted because he exceeded his NHL games-played limit and is no longer waiver-exempt … Defenseman Xavier Ouellet suited up for the Red Wings against the Boston Bruins in Game 5 of the NHL first round, getting the nod over Jakub Kindl. Ouellet played 9:20 and was a minus-1 with one shot … Right-winger Anthony Mantha (Val-d’Or, QMJHL) has been shredding the Halifax Mooseheads, scoring six goals in the past three games. However, the Foreurs have lost all three of those games and trail the QMJHL semifinal series 3-2. Mantha has a league-leading 17 goals (along with seven assists) in 15 playoff games and has scored his goals in every way imaginable. He dominates the league and carries his team … Right-winger Tyler Bertuzzi (Guelph, OHL) is off to the league final after the Storm knocked off the Erie Otters 4-1. His squad will face the North Bay Battalion … Defenseman Mitchell Wheaton and winger Marek Tvrdon (Kelowna, WHL) saw their seasons end in disappointing fashion as the CHL’s No. 1-ranked Rockets lost 4-1 to Portland in the WHL semifinals … Forward Willie Coetzee cleared waivers and was assigned to Grand Rapids. He spent all season on the injured reserve with the Red Wings because of a knee injury.

    @ rob

Nit picking over exact phrasing is a little rediculous.

I’m not saying buck the kids and sign all aging vets. What I am saying is were about to enter a big year of roster turnover and I think it would be wise to fill SOME of those holes with a key FA signing or two,

Just because I think Kindl has played his last game as a wing doesn’t mean his cap hit isn’t friendly. 2.4m for a D coming from our system with his amount of experience might be intriguing to another team. I don’t want him on the wings, but I don’t think think there’s not a gm out there who might bite.

Given the rediculous time Weiss has had with injuries, no I don’t think he is a problem YET. Which was already stated. If he was battling a groin injury all through camp and the beginning of the season that might have something to do with his inability to acclimate properly to the wings system. A system which happens to be very demanding on centers.

  2. AB says:

I don’t get the Mrzak trade talk. He’s going to be THE key for the Wings going forward. Jimmy is top 10-15 tender with great moments and plays strong in the clutch (down the stretch last couple years, last years playoffs) but he doesn’t have an elite, top 5 in the world skill set like Mrzak has shown and hopefully proves in the NHL in a couple years.

Teams are so close these days it’d be great to have an advantage at Goalie in the playoffs rather then giving that adv. to most playoff opponents like now. i.e. Rask.
