Tyler Bertuzzi wasn’t drafted for his point-production, but he’s doing plenty of it this season.

With a one-goal, four-assist showing last Friday against the Kitchener Rangers, the Guelph Storm left-winger upped his numbers this season to 21 points in 16 games, tied for 25th in the Ontario Hockey League.

“It’s good to get the confidence up with five points,” Bertuzzi told after his big game. “Me and Fabbs (Robby Fabbri), we had some chemistry, and it was working good for us.”

The Red Wings drafted Bertuzzi high relative to his Central Scouting ranking of 207th among North Americans, taking him in the second round, 58th overall, and comparing him to Chicago Blackhawks agitator Andrew Shaw.

“Bertuzzi is that type of player where he’s in your face and plays hard every shift,” Red Wings scout Jeff Finley said at the time. “He’s an agitator but he’ll back it up. He handles himself very well but just brings it hard every time.”

The 6-foot 178-pounder is just one point away from matching his 2012-13 point total of 22, recorded in an injury-shortened 43-game campaign. Overall this season he has five goals and 16 assists along with 32 penalty minutes and two fighting majors.

Bertuzzi’s strong play — tied for fifth in team scoring — has helped the Storm to a 10-game winning streak and a 15-3 overall record, ranked second in the country as of last week.

“We want teams gunning for us,” Bertuzzi said.

NOTES: Winger Anthony Mantha (Val-d’Or, QMJHL) was named his league’s first star of the month for October courtesy of his league-leading 43 points in 17 games. He has a 10-point cushion atop the scoring race and will also represent the QMJHL in the Subway Super Series … Center/winger Zach Nastasiuk (Owen Sound, OHL) signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Red Wings. Nastasiuk will also repeesent the OHL in the Subway Super Series … Defenseman Adam Almquist got the call to Detroit this week to replace injured Brendan Smith and played 15:51 and was a minus-2 his NHL debut against Winnipeg on Monday. He received 2:28 of ice time on the power play. “He has to fall in love with the gym — and eating,” Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock told the Detroit News. “The challenge is there for him. He has a lot of talent and he can move the puck.” Babcock compared Almquist to Winnipeg Jets defenseman Tobias Enstrom … Goaltender Jake Paterson (Saginaw, OHL) will be part of Team OHL in the Subway Super Series. He’s looking to win a job on Canada’s world junior team for the second year in a row … Goaltender Petr Mrazek got high praise from Babcock after shutting out the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday. “He’s a kid who thinks he’s here to take (Jimmy) Howard’s job and not (Jonas) Gustavsson’s job,” Babcock told “He’s just got that kind of attitude.” … Right-winger Martin Frk was sent to ECHL’s Toledo, where he’ll need to work on his all-around game and get his confidence up. Forward Trevor Parkes and defenseman Max Nicastro are also with Toledo.

  1. Patrick W. says:

I’m still not a big fan of the Bertuzzi pick. We likely could have had him later though I like some of our later picks so we’ll see. It was a free pick anyway.

Anyone been able to watch the Griffins? I’m wondering what Jarnkrok has looked like. Is he playing top-line minutes? I know he’s adjusting to the N.A. game and it’s a small sample size but I was expecting a little more production from him. Maybe that’s a future story because he’s our top prospect, I’m interested to see how he’s doing.

  2. Adam Banks says:

While I will say it’s not as great of a resource as this website, is a good resource to catch up on GR news. You can find a depth chart there that gives you an idea of where everyone stands.

The thing for Jarnkrok is that Emmerton (NHL vet) and Sheahan (Jumbo sized compared to Calle) are a bit ahead of him, being used to the smaller ice. I do, however, like the fact that they seem to be playing Jarnkrok and Pulks together. Could it be a sign of the future? Giving those two as much time as possible to build chemistry before unleashing them on the NHL as a pair? Thoughts?

  3. Adam Banks says:

My mistake, the depth chart compared to a recent story on the website are conflicting. According to their story from Oct. 30, Jarnkrok was centering the top line with Nyquist and Jurco.

So yes, he is getting top line minutes if the story is accurate.

  4. dickered says:

Its Jurco Jarnkrok Nyquist, hes looked solid but isnt producing all that much especially compared to others on the team. Sproul had 3 points today. And this Bertuzzi pick is looking solid now, guys hits and fights and now his offense is coming around. Classic late bloomer, makes the OHL at 5’8 when he shouldnt have, fights anyone. Now hes grown to 6’1, 180 something and is a legit threat to score on you or beat you up

  5. ScottD says:

Anyone know the status on Jensen? I know he busted his shoulder in the fight with Bert Jr. (Still don’t understand why that happened). I hope Frk figures things out soon. I had higher hopes for him.

  6. Patrick W. says:

Yeah that fight was really silly. I remember seeing intitial reports were saying mid-November could be when he’s cleared to play. Hopefully soon.

It is disappointing that Frk hasn’t been able to stick with the Griffs. I think many were worried that point totals in junior were a result of the linemates he played with. Sometimes it takes time, hopefully he’s working his butt off to make it back to the A.

  7. Patrick says:

First year pro… Frk will be fine…. better to give him top line minutes in Toledo than 4th line minutes in GR…

  8. Daryl says:

You can’t forget Frk is one of the youngest players in the league right now. He’ll be fine, just needs playing time. Jurco was in the same boat last year and it took him most of the year to really get going. Unfortunately for Frk though, with all the talent we have on the griffs there’s just no space for him to work through any growing pains. I’m really interested though to see what he, as well as Tvrdon can do with the Walleye.

  9. Adam Banks says:

Agree Daryl, I have high hopes for Tvrdon if he can stay healthy. Ridiculous size, great shot, could be a potential second or third line power forward for the Wings. Tvrdon’s and Nedomlel’s size me hope they will be able to get to the big club eventually, especially with the mean streak Nedomlel has.

  10. Kris says:

Anyone who watched Jarnkrok in the last game against Hamilton can see that kid is going to be just fine

I like Frk and Trvdon in Toledo, playing time and confidence can be had there

  11. Lukas says:

I think Wings Fans need to be patient with Martin Frk. He’s a a year away yet from finding his game at the AHL Level. The talent is there. The organization is high on Tyler Bertuzzi, I hope he can evolve into a Steve Downie-type NHLer, hopefully with better luck staying healthy and more consistent offensive output!! I am very excited for this pool of prospects, excellent article! GO DETROIT!!! Quick Launch
