It’s been a season of growth for Martin Frk.

After getting off to a sluggish start back in September — just two goals among nine points in his first 11 games — the Halifax Mooseheads right-winger found his footing and hasn’t looked back since. His strong play has helped land the Mooseheads in the Canadian Hockey League’s Memorial Cup tournament in Saskatoon, Sask., starting Friday.

Frk, who the Detroit Red Wings selected in the second round (49th overall) last summer, has piled up 46 goals and 62 assists for 108 points in his past 62 regular-season and playoff games. He had 13 goals among 33 points in a 17-game post-season run to help the Mooseheads capture the QMJHL’s President’s Cup.

Frk’s numbers are inflated because he plays on the top line with top-five 2013 draft prospects Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin and receives ice time on the No. 1 power-play unit for a team averaging 5.14 goals per game. In an amazing show of dominance, Frk, MacKinnon and Drouin combined for 36 goals and 65 assists for 101 points in 17 playoff games.

But he has also shown growth in several areas, putting draft-year concussion issues in the past, improving his skating, and working harder in the defensive zone and on the back-check. Those improvements complement his incredible slap shot and above-average offensive skills and hockey sense, although at the next level, he’s going to have to learn to move his feet, win puck battles, and stay disciplined.

The 6-foot, 203-pounder has also stepped up at key moments for the Mooseheads. In the semifinals, he had five goals and five assists in a four-game sweep of the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. In the final, with the Mooseheads holding a 2-1 series lead on the Baie-Comeau Drakkar, Frk’s two-goal, three-assist outburst helped turn a 2-0 Game 4 deficit into a 7-4 win for Halifax on the way to a 4-1 series victory.

The checking will get a lot tighter at the Memorial Cup, where the Mooseheads will be hard-pressed to maintain their five-goal-per-game output against the Portland Winterhawks, London Knights and host Saskatoon Blades.

This is expected to be Frk’s swan song with the Mooseheads, as, like Tomas Jurco before him, he is eligible as a 20-year-old to play in the American Hockey League next season and should be able to earn a spot with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

NOTES: Left-winger Andreas Athanasiou (Barrie, OHL) saw his season come to an end last week. The Colts let a 3-1 series lead slip away and lost 4-3 to London in the OHL final. Athanasiou finished tied for fifth in OHL playoff scoring with 12 goals and 13 assists for 25 points in 22 games … Defenseman Nick Jensen signed an amateur tryout contract and is eligible to suit up in the AHL playoffs with Grand Rapids … The Griffins are tied 1-1 with the Toronto Marlies in the Western Conference semifinals … Winger Tomas Tatar (Grand Rapids, AHL) has a team-leading five goals and two assists in seven games … Grand Rapids rookies Tomas Jurco and Teemu Pulkkinen have three goals and two assists apiece in the post-season while sophomore Landon Ferraro has a goal and four assists … Center Calle Jarnkrok has just one assist and a minus-2 rating in seven games while averaging 14 minutes per game with Sweden at the IIHF world championship. Sweden faces Canada in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

    Greetings from the Netherlands,

Just wanna say that i always enjoy reading these youth reports.

    Keep up the good work!

  2. iNcHicORe says:

agreed. this website is phenomenal. thank you for keeping this going all these years.

  3. ScottD says:

I hope Frk can bring his success to the Wings once his Junior days are done. It would be nice to have someone with toughness, size and have the ability to score a goal.

  4. ryan says:

Every time I read an evaluation of Martin Frk’s game, the negatives start with his skating. Hopefully he improves that to the point where it won’t keep him out of the NHL. Two or three years worth of coaching in Grand Rapids should sort out the rest.

  5. ScottD says:

Well Ryan they said the same thing about Tatar and he seems to be getting close to full time with the Wings. Plus remember someone by the name of Holmstrom? His skating was brutal. I like to think he had a decent career.

  6. iNcHicORe says:

skating can always improve. remember when scouts were concerned about datsyuk’s “awkward stride”?

  7. Stevie Y says:

Martin Frk had 1 goal, 1 assist, +3 rating in the first game of the Memorial Cup for Halifax. They play again tonight at 7:00 PM against host Saskatoon. Great win by the Wings yesterday. I will be at the game tomorrow night in Motown.

  8. John P says:

The Griffins are really getting a lot of good players. Pulkkinen has stepped right in and contributed. I am curious if any of the other players showing up will get a chance in the playoffs or if its too late to start adding players. I think Frk is a long ways away from being NHL ready and he has a number of prospects in front of him, it will be interesting to see how he and Athanasiou deal with the competition and diminished playing time. Thanks for the update.

  9. ScottD says:

John P I think the new kids that are coming in will be used like Detroit’s Black Aces are usually used. I doubt any of them will get a chance unless there is a string of injuries. Which I pray does not happen.

  10. YVR says:

Tonight, in Saskatoon at end of 2nd period, Frk has 3 goals and 1 assist as Halifax leads London 8-2. Quite a sniper for sure.

  11. ScottD says:

The Griffins are moving on to play Oklahoma. I wish I could have seen this game. It must have been a great come from behind win. The playoff wins are great experience for these kids. It sounds like some of our best prospects aren’t even in the AHL yet. I haven’t been this excited about our prospect pipeline in quite some time.

  12. rob says:

Ive seen quite a few times this year and he makes me think of Luc Robitaille , seems too find the spots and he has an excellent shot since he lined up at the point on the PP with the Mooseheads
