Teemu Pulkkinen is slumping in Finland and his struggles date back to last season.

The 20-year-old winger, back with Jokerit of the Finnish SM-Liiga for his third full season, has just a goal and three assists in 15 games for a third-place club with the league’s second best scoring attack.

Dating back to Jan. 28 and including playoff contests, the hard-shooting, goal-hungry Pulkkinen has a meagre three goals along with nine assists in his past 36 games.

That’s a stark contrast to the 32 goals and 52 assists for 84 points he recorded in 94 previous contests.

Pulkkinen is described by Red Wings scouts as a potential “poor-man’s Brett Hull” for his ability to find open spaces and his elite natural ability to shoot the puck. The 2010 fourth-round pick (111st overall) signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Red Wings in the off-season.

Pulkkinen starred for Finland at last year’s IIHF world junior championship, piling up six goals and four assists in seven games and helping his country to a fourth-place finish. He has 26 goals and 24 assists for 50 points in 25 IIHF games at two world juniors and two under-18 championships.

NOTES: Center Alan Quine (Peterborough) remains out with mononucleosis. He hasn’t played all season … Defenseman Ben Marshall (Minnesota, WHCA) has two goals and two assists in his first four games … Defenseman Xavier Ouellet (Blainville-Boisbriand, QMJHL) remains one of the best blueliners in the CHL. He’s off to a great start for a national contender, with two goals, 12 assists and a plus-8 rating through 14 contests.

  1. RW19 says:

Seen him play a few times now since 2010 and in my humble opinion, Ouellett was a genius pick by the Wings. Considering the way he played last year, I never thought he was ranked high enough in RWC prospect ranking. He is captain material, reminds me a lot of another excellent French Canadian defenseman from the 1990-2005 era, Eric Desjardins, an on ice general type – but I think he is much more physical.

As for Pulkinnen – hopefully it is a slump. But who knows. I mean a lot is expected from a guy that dropped to the fourth round in his draft year. As for his WJC production last year, didn’t most of that come in one game?

  2. Pulu says:

Pulkkinen is still 20 yo, not 21. He had a very difficult start to the season but has looked better in the last couple of games.

He worked on his skating during the summer and it has clearly developed. Still has work to be done until he’s quick enough for the NHL, though.

Scored a goal today, after quite a while.

  3. Shawn says:

I just want to know if Pulkkinen’s attitude and work ethic are intact… and that he still has the confidence of his coaches. Is he picking up anything from Fil?

I thought McKee was playing at Western this year.. is he waiting until next? Why?

  4. Joakim says:

I remember one year ago, then it was Tatar who was having a bit of a slump. “He’s sulking”, and so on did some write in the commentary field, even though he certainly wasn’t. Before too long, he got going and ended the season with 57 points (24+34). These things happen to young players, and the experiences form part of molding into a pro.

Fil knows everything about having hockey within oneself, but annoyingly for stretches not getting the puck in the net. He’s a perfect springboard.

  5. Stevie Y says:

McKee is playing at Western Michigan next year after a year in the USHL. The one to watch is Jarnkrok. Apparently insiders believe he may be with the Wings full-time next year. Tatar and Andersson will also be with the Wings next year. Does anyone know when Quine will be back from mono with Peterborough?

  6. Shawn says:

Yeah, I could see Jarnkrok maybe making the leap directly next year. Possible.

So a year in the USHL, then four at Western, then maybe three in GR… I don’t see the point of playing him in the USHL this year.

  7. Stevie Y says:

Playing McKee in the USHL this year gives the Wings an added year before they need to sign him. He is a very raw talent and that one year in a good U.S junior league may benefit both the Wings and McKee in the long run. When are we going to get a deal done? I want to see some of these young guys this year.

  8. Shawn says:

Don’t they already have like four years before they need to sign him if he’s going to WMU?

  9. Shawn says:

I must be catching him on a bad day, this is the first time I’ve had the opportunity to watch Ouellet. I was happy to see a QMJHL game recorded yesterday and even moreso when i saw it was Ouellet’s team, but he is not impressing. He seems hesitant. I expected a better skater and more polished player… I hope he’s just having a bad day. Granted I’m only halfway through the game.

  10. Shawn says:

RW19, how many rimes have you seen Ouellet? Am I catching him on a bad day here? Did you see yesterday’s game?

  11. YVR says:

Yes, Ouellet did seem tentative on Friday night and kept slowing the game down to his level (which is good at times). His passing was really good though. On Sat. he had a goal and two assists vs a tired team on the road in a blowout, so since I did not see that game, hard to evaluate his play. Still think he and Sproul will anchor the Wings D in a few years.

  12. Shawn says:

Good deal. Thanks. Yeah, his passing was good, but even there he almost coughed it up a few times because he was waiting too long… Quick Launch
