Martin Frk and Xavier Ouellet will spend the 2012-13 season on two of the best teams in the Canadian Hockey League.
Frk, a winger, plays for the QMJHL’s Halifax Mooseheads, ranked seventh in the CHL, while Ouellet, a defenceman, plays in the same league with the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, ranked fifth.
The 19-year-old Frk has started the season operating on the Mooseheads’ second line with undrafted forwards Matthew Boudreau and Luca Ciampini. He also mans the point on the top power-play unit alongside San Jose Sharks draft choice Konrad Abeltshauser.
The Mooseheads are led by two 17-year-old forwards expected to go high in the 2013 NHL draft in Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin.
Frk, who missed three months last season with a concussion, has a goal and two assists in four games along with six shots and a plus-1.
Ouellet, meanwhile, captains the Armada and dominates the club’s blue-line minutes alongside over-ager Samuel Carrier, a former Washington Capitals prospect.
Ouellet, who had 60 points last season while helping Blainville-Boisbriand to a third overall finish, has tallied a goal and three assists through four games this season.
Five other Red Wings draft picks are playing in the CHL — including red-hot defenceman Ryan Sproul of the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds — but their teams are not in the top-10 ranking.
Following is this week’s statistical report.

Yes! RWC is back!
I see a lot of assist totals and not as many goals. Granted its early but I would like to see some more goal totals. I think Ouellet could be an excellent defense man with Detroit. Plus what is up with Pulkkinen’s penalty minutes? 29 in 7 games? Is he becoming a goon or something? (just kidding)
Ouellet is on Bob MacKenzie’s 2nd pairing for the Canadian World Junior Team; Bob’s first “non-returning D-man”. http://watch.tsn.ca/nhl/clip776083#clip776083
Another note of interest: Alexei Marchenko is presently playing with the great Pavel Datsyuk, in CSKA. I believe this could really inspire the guy to re-double his efforts and strengthen his determination to do whatever it takes to play in the NHL with the Red Wings.
He plays just north of 7 minutes per game, presumably on the third pairing, but it’s a top team in its league so the fact that the coach has confidence in him to play top-6 should be encouraging.
Also, Mattias Bäckman is doing really well in Sweden, playing 19 minutes per night on the first pairing. He’s an important contributor to his team.
Joakim, great stuff!
I’m also VERY glad to see RWC back!
Joakim, you must be the European correspondant for RWC. One possible piece of good news, if the lockout goes all season long, is to put the Wings in a draft lottery for slotting in the draft. This would be similar to the 05 draft in which you may recall the Wings drafted 19th. According to reports there are some terrific prospects available in the next draft.
Love this site! I tell Wing fans in Wisconsin about it all the time.
@Dale…and that 19th pick o/a was Kindl, and 7 yrs later he has barely broken a sweat in the NHL, basically because he was never given a chance by Babcock/Holland to earn a spot…sooner or later Kenny must rethink his philosophy of letting players ripen (rot) in the minors—–Tatar’s name comes to mind as it looks like he plays his 5th season for GR…
