The Grand Rapids Griffins haven’t missed a beat as they prepare to defend last year’s AHL Calder Cup triumph.

The Griffins, who finished last season with 92 points, have already exceeded that total, breezing to a 46-22-6 record to leave them two points away from the 100-point plateau and a win away from clinching the Midwest Division crown.

What’s most impressive about their success — trailing only the Manchester Monarchs, Texas Stars and Springfield Falcons in the overall standings — is that they’ve done it despite losing so many key players along the way.

The Detroit Red Wings have a 6-foot-5, 215-pound defenseman who is quietly developing into a quality prospect on the Canadian Hockey League’s No. 1 team.
Colin Campbell
Published on Monday, March 31, 2014, 9:43 am, under 2013-14 RWC Reports
The Detroit Red Wings have loaded up on young skill in the NHL draft over the past half-decade. Now, they’re using free agency to add young grit.
Ryan Sproul
Published on Monday, March 17, 2014, 10:54 am, under 2013-14 RWC Reports
When the Detroit Red Wings selected Xavier Ouellet and Ryan Sproul just six picks apart in the second round of the 2011 draft, they desperately needed to restock their shelves on the blue line.
Calle Jarnkrok
Published on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, 12:33 pm, under 2013-14 RWC Reports
The trading of Calle Jarnkrok has been the subject of much debate since the Detroit Red Wings sent the Swedish center to the Nashville Predators.
Teemu Pulkkinen
Published on Monday, March 3, 2014, 11:40 am, under 2013-14 RWC Reports
Teemu Pulkkinen’s elite shooting ability has always been his No. 1 asset — and the American Hockey League is getting a taste of what it’s all about this season.
Mattias Backman
Published on Monday, February 24, 2014, 11:59 am, under 2013-14 RWC Reports
There’s no timetable for defenseman Mattias Backman to bring his game to North America just yet — but for now, he’s excelling in the Swedish Hockey League.
Mitchell Callahan
Published on Monday, February 17, 2014, 10:13 am, under 2013-14 RWC Reports
It’s not clear whether Mitchell Callahan will ever get a chance with the Detroit Red Wings. But what is clear is he’s doing everything he can to earn his shot.
Landon Ferraro
Published on Monday, February 10, 2014, 11:47 am, under 2013-14 RWC Reports
Landon Ferraro has the rest of the season and training camp to show the Detroit Red Wings he belongs in the NHL — otherwise he’ll be riding the waiver wire.
Calle Jarnkrok
Published on Monday, February 3, 2014, 11:57 am, under 2013-14 RWC Reports
Calle Jarnkrok refuses to cheat — and while that’s a good thing for an organization built around elite two-way players, it’s a bad thing for his stats.
Anthony Mantha
Published on Monday, January 27, 2014, 12:34 pm, under RWC Rankings
It’s looking more and more like the Detroit Red Wings hit the jackpot drafting Anthony Mantha.
Mattias Janmark
Published on Monday, January 20, 2014, 9:23 am, under 2013-14 RWC Reports
Mattias Janmark is becoming a hard player to keep off the scoresheet.
Hampus Melen
Published on Monday, January 13, 2014, 3:35 pm, under 2013-14 RWC Reports
Hampus Melen’s season is over and it’s not clear when he’ll be able to return to the ice — but the Detroit Red Wings remain intrigued by his upside.
Teemu Pulkkinen
Published on Wednesday, January 8, 2014, 2:15 pm, under 2013-14 RWC Reports
The Detroit Red Wings have called on the Grand Rapids Griffins for seven prospects this season, but Teemu Pulkkinen has yet to earn his first NHL look.
Anthony Mantha
Published on Tuesday, December 31, 2013, 5:11 pm, under 2013-14 RWC Reports
The fact that Anthony Mantha was on Canada’s so-called “roster bubble” just a week before the IIHF world junior championship is looking baffling now.
