Six free agents to try out
The Detroit Red Wings have invited six free agents to their annual prospects tournament in Traverse City beginning Sept. 12.

Among those auditioning for contracts is former Red Wings draft choice Stephen Johnston, who was not signed earlier this summer and went unselected after reentering the NHL draft in June. Additional tryouts will be announced when the main training camp roster is finalized.

Following is a review of the preliminary invitees (listed alphabetically with position, age, height, weight, statistics, and 2009-10 team).

PAST STORIES

Sniper Pulkkinen 'like Jari Kurri'
When Ari Vuori puts Teemu Pulkkinen in the same sentence as Jari Kurri, you know the Detroit Red Wings think highly of their newest Finn.

The Red Wings selected Pulkkinen, a 5-foot-11, 183-pound sniper, with the 111th overall pick in Saturday's NHL draft.

Red Wings invite three bonus picks to camp
When the NHL draft ended on Saturday, the Detroit Red Wings' work wasn't done. Director of scouting Joe McDonnell was quickly working the phone inviting a handful of undrafted prospects to training camp.

Just hours later, McDonnell had already received confirmation that three players have decided to report to Traverse City.

Nifty Jarnkrok can 'own the puck'
Calle Jarnkrok lists the Detroit Red Wings as his favorite team and Henrik Zetterberg as his favorite player. Given that, the nifty Swede is going to love what the Red Wings had to say about him after drafting him.

"I like to think of him like a Zetterberg," said Red Wings scout Ari Vuori.

Czech stopper Mrazek 'competes'
The Detroit Red Wings didn't go looking for a goalie at the NHL draft, but also didn't have a problem picking one when the time was right.

The time was apparently right in the fifth round (141st overall), when the Red Wings selected Ottawa 67's stopper Petr Mrazek.

Dynamic Marshall a 'gamble'
Ben Marshall may have been written off by many teams because of his lack of size, but Detroit Red Wings couldn't bring themselves to do it.

The 5-foot-9, 160-pound defenseman's swift skating and dynamic offensive ability were too much to ignore and convinced the Red Wings to draft him.

Aubry grows up fast
Few prospects have grown more in recent years than Louis-Marc Aubry. Literally.

Although he checked in at almost 6-foot-4 and 186 pounds when the Detroit Red Wings drafted him 81st overall in Saturday's NHL draft in Los Angeles, it was only three years ago when he stood just 5-foot-11.

Sheahan offers rare size-skill combo
When the Detroit Red Wings first came across Riley Sheahan two years ago, they never dreamed they'd have a chance at drafting him.

"We always thought we'd never see him in the draft, picking anywhere below 10," said Red Wings director of scouting Joe McDonnell.

Macek makes his points
The way the Detroit Red Wings see it, Brooks Macek finds a way to get his job done. And his job is to create offense for his linemates.

The Tri-City Americans center produced 21 goals and 52 assists for 73 points in 72 games in the Western Hockey League regular season.

Tatar hangs onto top spot
Tomas Tatar's relatively sluggish second half wasn't enough to drop him from atop Red Wings Central's final prospect ranking of 2009-10.

The Slovakian sparkplug hit a wall after a sensational first half in the American Hockey League.
